I'm not being critical I know Nirvana is/was a popular band I respect all of their talents I just wasn't in to them I can listen to their songs OK. Now because our drummer said he would like to cover a Nirvana song our singer is saying to keep our drummer in to the band he wants to do this tune tomorrow night at rehearsal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZEJhkDS4c

I tried to explain respectfully that I don't want to cover any thing by Nirvana or any one else, exception very old very cool song, and that we should just work on the new songs we have and write more, so, I'm learning the song because it doesn't matter what I think or want and I don't understand and sorry for the rant, sorry all of the Nirvana fans.

Well, it's just the one song.

But I'm with you on doing cover tunes. I think it's cooler to do older or more obscure songs and B-sides.
Beatles did that a lot early on.
Also cool to cover a song but, change the genre of it; turn a rock song country, etc.

Hey, maybe do the Nirvana song but, as a polka

Nevin1985, thanks, after I learn this one I'll listen to 'about a girl'.

campbellgrafx, thanks, good ideas', after we play this one a couple of times and if they are happy with it maybe I'll try to suggest a change up of some kind. you got it though, I would rather play my own songs and to break from that the song has to rock harder.

I'm not nor will I probably ever be in a band if I even get good enough... but I always thought that when you are part of a group like that... well... there's some give and take or the group just won't gel that well. It becomes like family sort of. You can agree to disagree but play it for the sake of the band. Time will tell you if your audience enjoys it.

So yeah, if you're going to give it up and play a tune you REALLY don't like then I would say it's fair for the others to pick up a tune you really DO like. Give some - take some. 8)

I know just where your at with this. Covers are a great way to contact the audience. What I suggest is that you add your own slant to it. My band is in pretty much the same boat. I'm writing stuff quite profusely at the moment. I know as a band we wont be playing it for a couple of years, till we've really built a following. Other band members keep making suggestions for crap songs (luckily no nirvanah yet, I'll likely quit on that day. You gotta keep some self respect, right? ). Or worse yet stuff that everyone plays, free, bad company, cream. All the usuall boredom.

Its ok if your the only band on, but as soon as you start sharing bills you have to start looking at the other bands setlist. You obviously know this already.

From what I heard of your band on the 'Your next record' link (very very good btw). I think you could get away with putting a 5minute nirvanah medley together. That would be intresting, you could take all the best bits of any songs you like and meld em together. Any fans will likely wet emselves with pleasure, the drummer will be happy and you'll feel like you've acomplished something original'ish.

Or you could get a Sinatra impersonater to come on and do the song in a swing style.

I'll relate to you a little story that might be relevant...

I was in Sturgis, South Dakota for the Black Hills Rally in August of 2006. We hit the Full Throttle Saloon for the evening and were drinking pretty heavily and grooving to a band called Evick out of the Washington D.C. area. They were doing a lot of covers with a bit of their own stuff mixed in... but with a bar full of drunken bikers for a venue, they really rocked the house with all the brainless stuff like "She Hates Me" by Puddle Of Mudd... and the like (I was hoarse all the next day from screaming at the top of my lungs.) I had a good day at the Silverado casino in Deadwood and was celebrating with a great deal of enthusiasm.

So what I'm getting at is... you have to be prepared to either play your own stuff or "dummy it up" depending on what the venue calls for.

SBLS I know nothing is worse than playing something you just are not into. But it is only one song and I would guess you guys go with a majority rules format. So this one you were not for but bottom line it will take you a very short time to learn and it will be sang and done in no time. There is only one Nirvana song I can say I really love which is Heart Shaped Box, same with Alice in Chains Man in the Box.

I always like iy when a band plays a few covers in there sets and everyone from the Beatles to Vanhalen have done while clubbing, as everyone can connect with something familiar.

I like to think of covers as someones salute to the band that originally played them rather than just a copy but it all depends on how you play it. I love Nikininja's idea but another route you can go is to approach the guys and say yeah we'll do this but let's make it ours. Be original like everyone else is suggesting. You might as well have fun with it.
