I love y’all but, I just don’t hear enough of you givin’ it up for one of my main guitar heroes, Mr. Freddie King.
If it weren’t for this man, there would be no Stevie Ray Vaughn (I know y’all love SRV around here, I hear his praises all the time).
Eric Clapton learned much from this cat, as well. Allman Bros!?! Oh yeah, they learned from him, too.
Seriously, all modern blues based rockers owe a lot to this man.
So let’s give thanks to the Guitar Gods for the great "Texas Cannon Ball", Freddie King, ladies & gents…

...see, it ain't about how fast you play or how many notes you play, it's how you play the notes you play.
That's what I'm talkin' about! Okay, so I've had a few glasses of wine, but still...he IS the man! Can I get an amen!?!

Okay, I'll be quite now.

Camp right before you came on the forum we had a post talking about Freddie who is one of my faves, glad to see a young girl like you is going back right to the source. There is a great instructional DVD in the Signature Licks series on Freddie King by Hal Leonard that will walk you through some classics like the Stumble, Hideaway, San-Ho-Zay and more. It is done by Duke Robillard a great player in his own right. Try and pick up a copy it is like $19 and on an ebay store you can probably find one new for $15. But it will keep you busy for a while breaking down those songs and his style.

Amen and also to Freddie's inspirations :

Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, T-Bone Walker, Elmore James, and Sonny Boy Williamson.

When I was like 15 years old, there was a TV show out of Dallas called What's Shakin'. It is hard to describe the effect it had on me. It was a black music show with an unreal house band. They had the band standing on bleachers in the studio with the band leader standing on the stage out front. The leader of the band was Clarence Gatemouth Brown playing a non-reverse Firebird with three single coils...

Dallas was the home of Freddie King and he was a frequent guest. They would introduce him and he would take the stage...when I say "take the stage" I mean the guy showed up with so much presence that it was mind blowing. He was deep into the feel from NOTE #1 and just floored me. He would be completely drenched in sweat in the first 45 seconds of the first song with drips falling from his nose.

Since that time, I have tried to bring some of Freddie's feel to every gig with me. I will never come close to matching his intensity, but I figure anything in that direction is a good thing. :)

This is my favorite F.K. recording, Leon Russell's piano is an added bonus :

...and many I know thought that Clapton wrote "I'm Tore Down" and Jeff Beck wrote "I'm Going Down".

Love that story. I know what you mean about his intensity on stage. I had only heard his recordings for years. But when I finally got to see videos of him playing, it just took it to a whole other level for me. That's the most important thing about playing the blues and blues based rock is to keep it true and sincere. If you do, it'll show through in your playing and performance.

A few years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown in a small club venue. Got to shake his hand and had him autograph a cassette which he sold (along with T-Shirts, button, etc.) between sets. He's an incredible artist, as well. Even played his fiddle.
