A radio station I listen to has started a contest where you can win the autographed guitar seen below. I was wondering what kind of guitar this was (whether it was a true Gibson or a knock-off)....

Let me know, thanks! :D

I've seen so many good Gibson clones I couldn't tell from just that picture. Could be an Ibanez or whatever. Why not call or email the radio station and ask? 8)

Thanks!

Ohh, that is nice! I've already put in about 40 entries for it! :D The radio station has a program where you can earn points and spend them on contests and stuff!

So what makes it a "junior"?

sinngle Pickup

Since it has a humbucker as that pickup and not a P90 it's a Epiphone or a copy

Exactly. That's the first thing to look for when looking at a Les Paul from a distance. Epiphones have the corners cut off on the headstock.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

its a junior i guess because of the thinner body than a normal les paul and the single pickup.

Looks like an Epiphone by the headstock, but it could just be the angle.

So what makes it a "junior"?

the epiphone brand is old, they were once Gibson's chief rival, actually considered spperior by many. Gibson eventually bought them and use them as a platform for cheaper versions of their main models, plus a few designs based on old Epi designs.

That said most Epi's are very well built, and really good value.

the les paul Jr. tag has nothing to do with it being thinner or anything. Gibson branded a ton of their early electric guitar gear with les' name, including amplifiers. though it is in fact thinner, no carved top, different pickup configuration.

the original les paul models were pricey, like as expensive as a guitar gets, much like now. They wanted tto grab a part of the cheaper guitar market. A big part of their strategy was to market cheaper "student" models. these were marketed to sell to parents for their kids. The les paul jr was one such model. the Jr name was more to identify it as being part of the line, but aimed at the student market. being a cheaper model it didn't have all the fancy appointments of the parent brand. But the name was chosen to deliniate it for the student market, while still cashing in on les' massive popularity, and tp tie it to their flagship brand, much like "squier Strat" by fender.

The lower end Epi's are junk. You need to get into the $500 or better range to get something nice. Their Masterbuilts are exceptional instruments. I've been eyeballing the new 1959 LP. Gibson Burstbucker pups Mallory caps Switchcraft jack and switch all for $900. I tried one out at the local Georges Music and it was really sweet. Played great fabulous setup and tone to the bone. Very cool.
