I loved the original ABB but more or less lost track of them after Duane's death and the problems that followed. However, I've liked what I've heard recently but then again, Warren and Derek are great in their own right.

ABB was a major influence on me back when my semi-serious high school trio was looking to move away from the early to mid-60s stuff we were playing. We were looking for a direction and some examples of someone doing that style. A friend loaned me the first ABB album around Christmas of 1969. That in turn had much to do with our going more in a blues rock/jazz rock direction than toward hard rock like most of the other bands in the area.

I just freaked for "Live at the Filmore East"! :D

I also love Greg Allman's solo LP "Laid Back". I was playing "Please Come Home" on guitar (and vocal) just last night.

I work on "Rambling Man" sometimes. If I was in a band, I think I could pull it off, guitar and vocal.

Going to see them at the Wanee Festival in April; Govt Mule, Derek Trucks Band, Chuck Leavell's band, and Devon Allman's band will also be playing

Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are power house cream of the crop players who have done a great job taking the place of legends. I still wonder how Dickey Betts got booted from the band as he was a founding member who probably wrote there biggest songs, anyone have the real scoop on that one.

Everything aside a bunch of truly talented musicians who play serious music tastefully and perfectly in tune.

What, are you kidding? I ADORE the Allman Brothers!

I've said it before round here: if I could press the magic button and have the talent and musicality of just one great player infused into my brain and fingers it would Duane Allman. You can keep Vai, Satriani and the rest...

Duane's long solo on the live Elizabeth Reed is the best thing that has ever been done on electric guitar, in my humble, completely biased and pointless opinion.

I do think Derek Trucks is the only person who comes close to the spirit behind Duane's recordings. The Allman Bros without Duane never interested me much before - talk about Hamlet without the prince! But with Derek in front? Yeah, maybe...

Cheers - C

The Allman Brothers Band were instrumental (pun) in defining the sound of the southern rock genre of the 70's and 80's. They've never been associated with the Fender brand like some other bands, but they were a major influence on some other artists who are. I urge some of you younger players to listen to some of Duane and Dickey's early work as they were the first rock guitar duo to use alternating lead melodies and harmonies.

I have been heavily influenced by the Allman Brothers. Their blues roots and style I see in my own style today. Eric Clapton was a big fan of Duane Allman. Unfortunately as with most bands of that era drug and alcohol use caused most of the problems they experienced in their personal lives. Dickey Betts struggled for years and it eventually lead to his "divorce" from the remaining original band members in early 2000. He had been a no show at many concerts during the 90's.

On a side note if anybody ever wondered how Gregg Allman hooked up with Cher.... Dickey Betts 2nd wife Paulette was Cher's friend and personal assistant.

Today's line up is an awesome combination of experience and pure musical genius. In case you can't tell I'm a big fan....

Any idea if their son is a musician?

Mike if you're referring to Dickey Betts his son "Duane Betts" plays with him in "Great Southern". Dickey is retiring from the band and I believe Duane has been groomed to take his place.
If you're refering to Gregg Allman and Cher's prodigy his "son" used to be his "daughter" and was in the news recently due to some elective surgery...
disclaimer: I am no expert on their history...
