Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

try'd a Fender at the pawn shop and it sounded great the difference, guess, the 15 was like a really fast go-cart and Mesa Dual Rectifier with Marshall top cab on its' side is NASCAR. 8)

I personally have a 15W Line 6 Spider III amp that I bought when I started playing. I only play at home although I recently jammed for the first time with some buddies from work. As far as a practice amp this did it's job well for me. Since I was a beginner when I bought it I decided that a small modeling amp would give me some options until I decided what I really wanted to play and sound like. It has a decent clean tone and good crunch and metal settings and about 6 effects built into it. The best description for this would be jack of all trades and master of none. I have no regrets about buying it at all but I am in the process of gathering info and testing out some other amps as I take my next step after close to 2 years of playing. As for output a 15W amp is more than loud enough for home use. The first time I used it was the first time I used an amp period. When I was buying my guitar the salesman had me hooked up to some monster rig at the shop and had it all set at reasonable setting. Being a new player I got this home and pulled it out of the box, plugged it in and set the volume at about 5. I should have clued in by how loud it was when I was putting my fingers on the strings before I hit my first power chord and scared myself with the volume. There are some 15W amps out there that have amazing tone that you will love. I have zero experience with gigging and just about zero with jamming but from what I hear a 15W will have its limits when playing with others and get lost in the sound of the group. I hope this is along the lines of the info that you're asking for.

Valve ones are too loud for the house, too quiet for unmiked live use.

I have a Vox Pathfinder 15R and for a solid state amp it has a very warm tubelike tone moreso than any other solid states I've tried. It also has a great reverb circut and a tremolo that can even replicate the Johnny Marr sound on How Soon Is Now,it also has a boost feature that can give you a really good range of overdriven tone. There is also an optional footswitch for tremolo and boost. For around $130 it's a steal.

Can you please be more specific with what you're looking for?

15 watts tube or solid state?
Combo or head?
Playing at home or on stage?
Looking for heavy metal or clean tones?

15 watts solid state...forget about it. Don't even go there if you're planning on playing in a group.

15 watts tube, you're good to go in a band setting if your drummer isn't a hard hitter. Or just mic the amp and/or put it through a bigger speaker cab. 15 watts can be too much volume if you want natural tube breakup in your home and have sensitive neighbors.

Some popular 15 watt tube comobs:
Vox AC15
Fender Blues Junior
Fender Pro Junior
Fender Tweed Deluxe (5E3) - actually not quite 15 watts, but close enough.

Some popular 15 watt tube heads:
Vox Night Train
Orange Tiny Terrror

15 watts tube is good or can be great. 15 watt solidstate combos vary, not necessarily because the amps are bad, but the typically smaller speakers you tend to find on lower watt solidstate might not be doing the amp justice...Or maybe its just me, but anything smaller than a 10-inch speaker is just too crappy sounding for me...

Some are valves in preamp and not power...some have different class, like class A, A-B, etc...

EL84 and 6L6 tubes make a difference too.

I have 15W SuperChamp Xd and love it, however it truly shines (for the money) when cranked but it's too loud for a house use. I have been told by my neighbor three houses down that he can hear me. On the other hand it is not loud enough in the unmiked live situation. I get by using pedals for lower volume with the semi decent tones. For a live situation I am still searching.

I am still not sure is it better to have home 5W tube amp or 40-50W with hotplate or similar device and without it it would be great for live.

Good point about tube types. There is a slight difference in sound between EL84 and 6V6. Most amps around 15 watts use two EL84's or two 6V6's. Single ended 6L6 amps are very rare. A duet of 6L6's and you're looking at 40+ watts, generally speaking. Maybe two 6L6's in parallel could produce around 15 watts, although I've never heard of one.

I have worked with quite a few bands in which the guitarist has used or uses the Fender Blues Junior: 15-watt tube preamp/power amp platform with a 12” Fender speaker.

The the 12" speaker in the Fender Blues Junior is a little fuller than the 10" speaker Fender Pro Junior, and the added versatility in the tube preamplifier is also very helpful for tonal adjustments.

Basically, a very simple package: renowned Fender reverb, flexible controls, and the FAT circuit.

Both the Fender Blues Junior & the Fender Pro Junior sound great. I just think if you might gig with these little packages, the Fender Blues Junior might carry the gig a little better without sound reinforcement. Either one will not get a you a dead clean sound at loud volumes, otherwise you will enjoy the potential true power-amp overdrive without killing the room with volume.

Either one is a great small club amplifier with a band that is playing to room not killing it with db's, or a practice &/or studio combo.
