I've been checking out guitars on Ebay and have noticed a bunch of "you fix" Epiphone Les Pauls with broken necks. If anyone in the forum has any experience with why this is I'd certainly like to hear it. Thanks

13 degree headstock angle means that the can get damaged when shippping while not properly packed.

I baby my gib. for fear of it falling or being dropped. I've seen to many epis and gibs with broken head stocks. I'm more comfortable with my fenders, as they seem to be more of a workhorse, and have taken more abuse, than I'd care to admit. I'm sure it can happen to any guitar, but I've only notice gibs over the years, not sure why that is. :?

I think the main problem with Gibson and Epi Les Pauls especially is the lack of a volute on the back of the neck makes the guitars susceptible to breakage.I believe this was a problem in the 60s with certain Firebirds and SGs and they ended up adding more wood to the volute.

Mahogony is too soft for electric guitar necks that have lots of frets exposed. Fender and rock maple necks is the way to go. :)

Thanks for the article. It was very interesting. He said even Epis don't break as often as a Gibson.

How does someone who you never met know that you can fix it? I mean I would be wary of buying something broken from somebody who tells me it can be repaired. Do they know for sure it can be repaired? How experienced are they with guitar repair? Or did they take it in for an estimate? Just make sure you don't end up paying money for someone elses trash that you can't do anything with other than maybe salvage some parts....

If you do know what you are doing a lot of these broken epi's are super easy to fix. there's actually a bit of a cottage industry going in buying these broken epi's fixing and flipping them. don't wade into the pool unless you know what you are doing though.

I've got a epiphone SG, great guitar. But theres only one problem, the necks glued on. If you put to much presure on it, it'll snap. I guess thats the same with all epiphones.....

Hello Guitslinger,

Yep, that's the head of the nail.

Cheers.

Yeah, im not sure i see the downside of a set neck. Many people believe that a bolt on neck is inferior to set necks when it comes to tone and stability. Just oppinions. My epi firebird vii has never had the head snap or neck joint move, and that sucker takes some serious abuse.

Vjcor's Ed Roman article is good, I've read it before and the breakage is a problem, but kinda is with any guitar- I had an old 1986 Kramer Pacer that got trashed by UPS because the guy didn't pack it proper. That was a heartbreaker!
