This thread is awesome.

Although I've actually begun with theory (I started out as a classical guitar player at a University) I am reading and learning new things here, especially "shortcuts" for better understanding things I've learned by heart at the course, decades ago.

For beginners it is really priceless.

Thank you very much indeed, OP!

Many artists can not read music. James Taylor, both singer and songwriter, has said he did not. Barbra Streisand has said she never used a vocal coach (except once for advice on a physical matter). I can not read music, except for percussion notation which allowed me to read music sheets for full arrangements of bands. This timing skill allowed me to mark when certain instruments would need a camera shot. I or another would follow the sheet while I called out shots in real time.

Regardless, I would think many artists, such as those mentioned, have picked up some skill over time. I got discouraged with the technicality of it all, and thought my lack of retention was possibly dyslexia. Older learning methods were subject to question. Now that I have time, and teaching methods and tools have changed over time, I may try again. This thread is a welcome addition.

Thanks, Goranm.

Lots of good musicians never knew music theory, but it never hurt to know it either. Knowledge is never a bad thing.

That said, I really dislike the tone of the posts here, with "must", "have to" and other imperatives sprinkled throughout. Music theory shouldn't be rules, they should be guidelines and helpful, not prescriptive. Guidelines that are perfectly fine to disregard whenever it sounds better in the musical context.
If Gsus2 is the chord you need after a Gm, play it, without worrying about childish rules like that you must!!!1! not lower a minor third. You most definitely should when it sounds right.

Music theory rocks. Read, learn, and understand things like why it often sounds "better" if you sharpen the thirds a little bit, how a blues scale can be expanded to a dorian scale, or why some progressions work so well. But don't box yourself in. If the theory doesn't match your ear, go with your ear.

In theory, it helps to know something about theory. :D

Is this a postulate or presumption?
