Nevin I do not know how populated the area is where you live but why not take on some students and take some money teaching guitar. Even if you just take beginners to intermediate players you can clock some decent money with enough of them. Go put up flyers near schools and the likes. Even if you never taught before you will be able to do it, believe me.Good Luck bro and remember it is hard all over but this is a way you can make some scratch and if you would like me to make up a teaching regimen for you if you never taught just let me know.

If I had it to do over again I'd become a registered nurse. In shortage around here and great pay. Anything in the medical field is going to be in demand!! Back to school!!

Nevin, the largest growing part of the population is getting older and taking care of them in the medical profession will always be there. A couple years of school will get you in the door.

Nevin,

Approach the interview process as you might getting read for a gig. Part of a good job interview, and I have interviewed many people, is to do exactly that "put them on the spot" to see what they are really worth. Before any interview, have a list of reliable references as well as anticipate what they might ask. If they give you the opportunity to play a lead - kill it! Serious preparation will lead to success. Good hunting.

Nevin- How 'bout starting your own company? Break the rules about liscencing, taxes, insurance etc. You cant afford it right now. Just do it.
Minimize your exposure to liability, but do it.

Sell everything you dont need, sell your home, your extra car etc.
The middle class is over. It aint coming back.

What is the great idea you had but never acted on? Dont tell us, we'll steal it.

Imagine all the great stuff you'll be able to afford if you postpone gratification for now.

June 08 unemployment was under 6% September under 7% then October of 2009 to September 2010 it went up to 10%+ and forecast are showing no change until August projections of 9.9. When you hear Government people saying things are looking better that job lose is slowing it has nothing to do with them but the fact that companies have cut to the bone and less lose is natural when they have less to cut. Our Leaders have done nothing the last 13 months but watch jobless rate go up 3+ percent. I have to say it but Business and Investors create jobs and Government polices that treat them as evil is not a incentive for them to create jobs here.

CV- Indeed. Not only have the politicos done nothing, they're throwing new
liabilies on our backs. I just heard some hack say the eastern storms are
the result of global warming. They cant admit when they're wrong and will contort reality to make it fit their agenda.
And both parties are trying to hijack the so-called 'ground swell of anger.'
I hope we wont let this happen.

Right On!!!! That's like if they were to have pulled off a National Health Care only those who are American Citizens would get treatment. Like we believe that, what a major incentive that would be to sneak in. And Global warming is nothing but a way to charge tax for Carbon credits so the Government can get more money to waste and don't kid your self and think it will not find its way to each of us in ways like buying a certain car it will cost you a charge for its life expected carbon print. A charge added to your utility bill based on the amount you use and the carbon print from that amount. This administration is into this.

being out of a steady gig sucks
if you go to work in health care try not to let them talk you into this
The word Diener is German for servant. In English, it is generally used to describe the person, in the morgue, responsible for handling, moving, and cleaning the corpse . It is derived from the German word Leichendiener, which literally means corpse servant.
global warming
A rather remarkable thing happened Thursday: a documentary highly skeptical of man's role in global warming was aired on broadcast television.

The program, "Global Warming - The Other Side," was created and hosted by John Coleman, the founder of The Weather Channel, and debuted on San Diego's independent television station KUSI.

Readers should be familiar with Coleman as the man who not only called global warming "the greatest scam in history," but also advocated suing Nobel Laureate Al Gore to expose the fraud.

Breaking with American media's tradition of almost exclusively broadcasting programs supporting Gore's view of climate change, "The Other Side" remarkably devoted an entire hour to fully explaining what the global warming-obsessed press dishonestly hide from the public (videos in four parts embedded below the fold, h/t Climate Depot):
don't get me started, impeach them all now.

Two growing areas I know of and ones that consider more experienced people (even 40+ and 50+) are medical care and network technology.

We're an aging population so med care is going to grow and cannot be outsourced unless society decides not to care for older people at all. I say that because even now, people with at least modest amounts of money are having surgeries overseas in countries where there's reasonable skill levels and much lower costs. But most people can't do that, so there's a need here "if" ...

Network techs seem to be a biz area where companies are reluctant to put the work in 3rd party. Hey, that's the CEO's email going through those wires ... !!! So overall, they're projecting decent growth there and you don't have to become a programmer or get a grad level degree to get in.

Accounting and finance -- they say there's growth there too but I'm not sure where. (That's my former occupation.) Still, they say the work is there however I'm going to say that's probably open mostly to younger people and most jobs will require advanced degrees and specialized training or becoming a CPA.

As for the out of the blue interview questions -- yep, been there early in my career. What I did ever after that was to keep my "Applied to" list and key paperwork right by my phone. That way, if a prospective employer called me out of the blue, I could make a few seconds of small talk while scanning for details.

One trick that I learned over the years was in order to make yourself feel less nervous and sound more confident in your interviews is to try and interview the company that is hiring you. They need you just as much as you need them. I wish you well because the market isn't great even here in Alberta it's not the best and it's always easy to find a job here.

Welcome to my world!
Yes, the job market truly sucks.
Been without work for longer than I care to admit.
I honestly do not believe it will get better anytime soon.
I believe the next two years we will see things get much uglier,
once all the unemployment benefits have been exhausted.

Things are so bad, I actually believe I have a better chance
making it as a musician than I do getting a “regular” job.

Man, I'm really bummed out, now.
Somebody tell a funny joke or something!

Nevin1985,

I work as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (AKA Licensed Practical Nurse in most states). The medical field always needs people. I love my job and what I do. But if Nursing is not your thing, there is also Radiology, Physical Therapy, and Respiratory Therapy. All these fields have great basic programs and sub-specialities that you could get into.

Not to mention Physician's Assistants and Paramedics too.

All these jobs are in high demand where I live.
