I think you need to be comfortable playing with the people around you. If you feel mediocre, step it up and do better. This will encourage the others in the band to do the same. Your mileage may vary (YMMV).

I really agree with this. I've played in a band that was much more advanced that I. It caused me to have to really push myself and I found that it really made a much more better player out of me. I was grateful for the experience.
