Why are so many people against tablature? I mean my guitar teacher taught me how to use and I've been teaching myself since then. I just dont see why it's so bad?

The purists consider it sight reading cheating akin to reading Cliff Notes in lieu of the novel itself.

Not all are "Against" it, I like tabs, but often times after learning them, I find that they can be some what wrong... and have to look at the "notes" for clarification. I think the purist's feel that reading music is the way to go. If you can read music, you can apply it to all forms of music, instruments, voice, etc. My opinion only 8)

IMO...personal preference. I use it as I cannot read complicated musical notations. Give me Twinkle Twinkle I can breeze right through it. Give me For Those About to Rock...forget it, tab all the way.

though not against them, I find a lot of people who learn songs from tab get the timing all wrong. i refer to them on occasion myself, but prefer to learn by ear. tab is just another form of notation, neither good nor bad, but i think it is often misused. A lot of tab lacks marking for note duration, and a lot of tab users don't refer to the (usually,) accompanying staff notation, or even their own ears to make sure the passgaes are correct.

I'm not against tab as I struggle to read music. However its rarely accurate, who do tone deaf people post tabs on sites then other tone deaf people tell them how bad it is and try to correct it with something equally as poor?

Arguably it's diminishing the number of people willing to try using their ears. I cant remember the last time someone said to me "I've been trying to suss this song out, can you have a listen along with me?". It's always "I've been trying to suss the tab and cant get it". So I ask to see the tab and have to tell them its wrong. It's not just website tabs that are poor. Even the books you pay for are downright shoddy. I think I've seen 3 accurate tabs in my time as a guitarist.

Also its a poor medium as opposed to written sheet. It has no way of expressing timing unless you limit yourself to playing along to guitarpro or powertab.

I must admit I use tab software, its a distant 2nd to my lugholes though.

What I do find it useful for is when I have to suss a song fast, that I dont have a copy of but can kind of remember.

I use powertab to write stuff for my bands bassist who sight reads excellently. I write the tab out, adjust the timing on it, convert it to score. You can see the shortcomings of tab in that situation. I turn up at rehearsal, hand him the score and he plays it. Simple.

i see your point. In a way i use my ears, i wont be able to tab out a song myself but i have the tab up and the song playing, i usually play along to the song, it helps me out. But i have seen a few bad tabs but i've seen a lot more good than bad. But i see your point

I agree. You have to listen and use the tab at the same time. At least I do.

As do I. That is my point and why I spend hours mucking about with powertab. My bassist doesnt have to listen to anything. Put the music score infront of him and off he goes. I'm not anti tab, I'm anti a lot of the laziness it aids. Which I too partake it.

One thing I cant remember seeing in music score is a accurate description of bent notes.

Well from knowing chords so well I was able to read tab the moment I first saw it. First let me say I never get something tabbed out on the web as it is really bad. I will usually get it from a magazne I subscribe to and I do have hundreds of back issues. If you have to learn a song fast it is a great help but if it is important for me to know a song,I always find a concert performance to go along with the tab to see where they are playing on the neck and what chord inversions they are using. This is the best way to go. As far as straight reading goes that has big faults to. How do they write a blues number or songs with bends. Also it does not tell you where on the neck to play.

I Agree. I went through a stage where I didnt pick up a guitar for a few years, but still while awake at night, Id be thinking about a riff or a song- and the main riff would hit me like a thunderbolt. Then I could grab a guitar, and within minutes Id figure it out without the need for a cd player.

A guy once said to me that when it comes to tab- you get exactly what you pay for. I remember a guy who introduced me to the chili peppers years ago as a teen and he had this big thick book worth a good penny full of guitar and bass tabs for bloodsugarsexmagik, and it was a really good tab. it was accurate and easy to understand how it all fit together while following it with the CD player. I bought that same album in tab last year, and the differences are noticable. Sometimes I look at it and say "How is that even possible?"

One thing I allways do, is I visualise while reading, how it is played. I also play a CD and I follow it through to the end of the song- but most importantly- I listen to the dynamics of the CD playing, how tone of the notes are being played, and I visualise where they should be in relation to the tab :)

But nothing will beat sitting next to the CD player with your guitar- trying to figure it out and getting it wrong 5 times before you get it right, and stumbling over something along the way.

The biggest issue I have with tabs is the people who upload them.
Have you ever seen one of the ones that people say "This isn't quite right but it sounds ok to me"
That really irritates me.

If your going to read Tabs just get a book with songs in it so you don`t get any Tab downloads with mistakes in them...or...as mentioned above play along with the song if you can.

I have no problem with tablature because it has been around for hundereds of years for various stringed instruments.

Most of the songs I want to learn aren't popular enough to be tabbed, so I have to learn by ear anyway.
