I've been playing for about two years. I've gotten good enough to play for my own amusement, but I'm nowhere near good enough to entertain anyone else.

Sometimes I feel like I know what I'm doing, but usually I don't. I'll be playing along just fine, and then the wheels come off. My teacher has me record myself everyone once in a while so I can critique my progress. Here's a recent example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3Mc0qWL16Q

You may find it hard to believe based on that clip, but I really have made some progress. If I never get any better, I can keep myself occupied for years with what I can play. Playing guitar is excellent therapy for me, and it makes me happy. I'm very nervous posting this video, so please be kind with your comments! 8)

Haha, I'm loving your playing and the axe!! :D Your laugh is so adorable at the end.... :P
Keep on playing and posting vids--I want to be kept updated as you progress!

Well done, russianracehorse... you've got guts, which I think is the single most important ingredient in a player. Years ago I had a student who had taken the guitar up at a later stage in life, a real blues aficionado. Progress was slow but steady (I'm sure he questioned it all the time), and when I moved on from that teaching position I would have left him at about your stage of development after a couple of years.

A few years after that, I found myself sitting next to him on a commuter train journey, and he had his guitar with him... he was all suited up, but took it in to play during lunch hours (which is now the only time I really get to play myself  )... anyway, he wasn't afraid to get it out and play me a note perfect rendition of Clapton's Hideaway right there on the crowded train. I couldn't have been happier, and I'm sure you'll make your teacher proud, too. You have my respect.

Extremely Cool, Russian Horse Race. Love that Tele, I was born in '72, so I've always had a thing for that model. Great to see you not only going for it, but loving it as well. :D

I consider myself a pretty good bass player. Not to be egotistic but I consider myself one of the better bass players at my school. I'm in my third year as a bass player and my main influences are Geddy Lee, John Entwistle, Jack Bruce, Adam Clayton, Les Pattinson, John Deacon, and John Paul Jones.

I want to put up a video of me playing Natural Science by Rush on YouTube but I can't seem to get it off my camera on onto the computer. If I do upload it I'm definately posting it. The song is really hard but it's the most enjoyable song for me to play especially during the last part of the song where it gets all crazy!

I can strum a simple chord pattern and sing without any problem, but I haven't tried picking a more complex pattern though. I should try that tonight when I practice. :P

Singing while playings easy! I refuse to sing unless a guitars in front of me and I'm playing it.

Haha, I'm pretty much just the opposite. :P I mean, I'll sing while I play, but mostly I just like to sing along with songs while I'm blasting them out of my computer speakers....like I am now. :P

I'm singing along to "Heaven for Everyone" by Queen right now. I friggin' LOVE this song.... :D

How was that Red Bull, by the way?

Ha ha, when I got there a V energy drink can said, "riley, dont pick the red bull, you know you want me an I'm much less dearer." And the red bull said, "Dont listen to that freak, be a man and buy me, I may cost alot, but the taste of me is worth it." I ended up buying 2 V cans

 OHMYGOD!! That just made crack up SO hard!! :D

I really have to try an energy drink one of these days.... :P

I warn you. There very addictive when your my age, 13. How old are you?

I'm 14. :P SO, they probably won't be any less addictive....

I'm turning 14 in a few months. But, your age is just a number. They might get you broke, i'm serious i won $150 bucks in a compettition (this was when I was heavily into em) and I brought atleast two rockstars and 1 red bull a day. I got broke in about a week. Luckily I'm not as addicted anymore....

Cool! :D When's your birthday?

And I say the same thing! Age is just a number, yet so many things are judged upon it....

 Haha!! Wow, I would have probably blown it all on completing my library of Queen CDs, or buying some new gear. :P

20th june. But, however old or young you feel is what your age is.
I betacha you wouldv'e spent it all on energy drinks if you were heavily into em...

Sweet! Mine's October 26th. :P
Haha, I say that, too. And if that's true, then my age varies. I sometimes feel as old as dirt, then other times I feel like I'm five years old again.
....
Ah, good times....

Haha, you're probably right.

I think I hear Energy Drinks Anonymous calling.... :o

Edit: Typo

I feel like I'm 16. all my family treats me like I'm 3, like I gota present for christmas, and it was this little book that specificly said on the back, "for kids 3-5". I felt like saying, "GOD I'M NOT A KID ANYMORE, I DONT EVEN LIKE BOOKS!!!!"

Oi.
Are you an only child, or do you have older siblings? Because it would make sense for them to treat you like a kid if you had an older brother or something.

OK...From a parent prospective, we never want out kids to grow up. Right now I have a 17 y/o daughter and an 18 y/o son. Although I know they are young adults, part of me would like to still think of them as children. It is only because your parents love you. If it does bother you to still be treated like a child, sit down and talk to them. Let them know your likes and dislikes. Open communication is always the key to any good relationship. It will also show the other party that you are a mature person and not a child any more.

Just my 2 cents on the matter (and works between me and my teenagers).

Haha, yeah, I know. Mom was actually just saying to me today that she's been having flashbacks of me running around the house with my short, curly hair I had as a baby, and then she would flash forward to when my sister and I would be grown up and out of the house.

She said she's very sad whenever she has those moments. :(

And Dad and Mom always say to us that whenever we have something that's troubling us or even if we just want to talk about something with them, they're always there for us. We have a great relationship in that way with them.

They still give me kiddie menus at restaraunts because im short......

KEEP THE QUOTE GOING!!!!!!!

What kinda guitars do you have by the way?

I'm not good. I can play all the chords, major 7, minor, minor 7, whatever. Anybody can if you just learn the E and A forms of barre chords. Power chords I have to learn specific to the song, because usually I don't use them. I play the Blues all the time and on a good day I can feel it and express myself through the music, even if the song is written. I can fake out most songs using Pentatonic Blues scales, giving them what I think is actually a cool Blues sound. I love the guitar. I've played since high school, off and on. If I have time and energy, that's what I do. I've got the bends, the left-hand vibratto, the hammerons and lifts, the whole kit. I enjoy playing Stairway acoustic with all the arpeggios, Cocaine, You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now, Ain't Gonna Worry My Life, and other great songs, imperfectly. I have played out on like open mikes, had people recording CDs say I'm really good, had neighbors come up and say how much they enjoy listening to me when I thought they would complain about the noise. That's right, I am not good. I just read tab. My kids will be better, studying violin and whatnot and really reading music well. I'll switch them to guitar later.

I've always tell people that I consider myself good enough to have fun with the guitar. I've been playing a lot in the last six years, and have found myself to progress a lot every year. Still, I wouldn't brag about myself......because.......well.....I just play good enough to have fun with the guitar.

What kinda guitars do you have by the way?

i have a dean soltero classic, schecter A-10 warthog (i think thats the name), an ovation acoustic idk the model ill have to check but its a pre fender ovation and worth well over $1500, my old squire mini strat, a mainstreet sg signed by AC/DC, and my stang gets in in a week or so

btw, what strat is that in your pic?

Squier bullet strat :) I love it. I also have a epiphone SG and some ashton peice of crap that i dont use cause its acouatic, I prefer electric. Post photos of'em

i will when the mustang completes (well, continues actually) the family..... and i figure out how to lol.... btw, why dont you like acoustic? i prefer mine (had it for 2 years and already some very minor fret wear) and i cant write on my electrics.... EVERYTHING i learn or write starts on the ovation

I'm in my mid thirties and been trying to teach myself over the past couple of years. Basically, I'm a beginner. I have quite a few friends who (IMO) are very good, when I actually get to play with someone else, I feel more confident and I can tell I'm improving, but when I play by myself, it's just noise... If I could only get someone to practice with more than once every 4 months or so... I know... Practice, Practice Practice!

Good on bass - I could play with a basic blues/classic rock/pop band without too much added work. But also limited - not much of a "note for note by ear" player even back when I played full time in a band. I could however work out most tunes with the music and some time.

Guitar -- fair, with the same comments as above though I am also able to play "leads" (blues style, free form).

Friends rate me higher on guitar than bass but that's because I play recognizable songs for them. Most bass parts by themselves aren't all that recognizable alone. To a musician though, I think I'd get the same rating as I rate myself -- possibly more creative on 6 string but much more technically proficient on bass.

I'm OK. I'm 51 and have been playing since I was a teenager. Have been in 17 or so bands, primarily doing originals for the past 20 years. Never made any money, but have had a lot of fun and once even played bass for a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer (Bo Diddley, RIP).

I'm uninterested in shredding or highly technical stuff. At this point I'm more of a singer/songwriter who plays guitar versus a guitarslinger type, though I can manage extemporaneous leads in my own limited style. I'm a proficient guitarist and bassist, and have been both or one of those in bands, and have played both instruments in church as well. I'm a beginning mandolinist, but have my first show this weekend with a new band I just joined, my first rock show as a mandolinist ever! Pretty stoked about that.

I'm more a "utility infielder" type player who can handle pretty simple stuff on a number of different instruments.
