My mustang is going to be here in about 2 weeks and it is dakota red. i went with that finish because of the 3 they offer the mustang in that is the one i like best..... the thing is, it just doesnt seem dark enough for me so i was wondering if theres a way i could refinish it in something like a sunburst finish.

Thanks in advance.

You could but it's a multi-piece body. You might end up with a seam, or more than one, showing through the finish.

For starters a sunburst finish is very difficult to apply as it involves several different stains that have to be blended and faded into each other. This process takes years to perfect and is way out of the realm of a beginner and you might as well forget paying an experienced luthier to do it as the cost would be much more than the guitar is worth. Finally as the other posters pointed out a sunburst finish wouldn't look good at all on a guitar made of different pieces of wood. The colour you picked is fine,is a classic Fender colour and in my opinion looks classy on a Mustang.

p.s.: my friends dad has refinished many guitars and can do sunburst and he would do it for free for me

It depends on how many pieces of wood were used for the body. A two piece, with the seam in the middle would likely look ok. Anymore than that and it just will not look right.
