Just like she says boys and gools... are they're any gools on here lol?
Anywho, I'm interested in having a bass kicking around but I don't know very much about how similar these instruments really are. Is the bass something you pick up after being able to play a guitar half decent and understand right away? Or is it much different? I just don't know, so allow me to shake the fender forum magic 8 ball! :)

Guitar and bass aren't so much different instruments as they are a different state of mind.Same notes, different perspective on them.

Technically, the bass is the same as a guitar, just a couple of octaves lower, however, it's a completley different mindset as far as playing goes. It's more about setting a solid rhythmic and harmonic foundation than anything else. If you're a lead type guitar player who likes to be out front in the mix, you'll have to dial that back a bit.

As a lifelong guitarist, I recently purchased a bass (Fender FSR Standard Jazz Bass) after playing a friend’s Asian Crappytacky bass a few times. I really got into playing it and couldn’t get it off my mind so I made the leap.

A bass is tuned one octave lower than a standard tuned guitar. If you get a standard bass (as apposed to a short scale), you’ll find the frets are spaced apart a bit more, too. I think of it as a good finger work out, myself. In fact, after you jam on a bass a while then switch back to your guitar, your guitar’s neck will feel really small and the strings really close together and tiny. That’s been my biggest problem so far, adjusting from the guitar to the bass right after playing.

The guitar is still my main axe but, I really enjoy mixing it up with the bass. I also find it expands my playing ability and has helped me come up with many new song ideas, too. Remember, it was Leo Fender who invented the electric bass guitar. He wanted to create a bass that guitarist could play. I recommend getting one. It is real fun.
