If I had to pick only one from rock & roll, I'd go with King Crimson's Starless. Not very lyric-heavy, but a great ethereal intro and verse section, tension-building middle in 13 (check out Bruford hitting the wood blocks in 4 over this; very cool), a breakout then back into the 13 section double-timed to a brutal ending with Wetton pounding out sweet sounds on his Precision and foxx fuzz/wah.

I could never answer this question. Russianracehorse I would never believe in a million years someone could put up a poll for the greatest song of all time and someone would actually put up a song I never heard.lol

Hey straycat. As much as anything, I used the Schubert piece to point out the fact that music did not begin in the middle of the 20th century. There are tons of great, accessible pieces of "classical" music that would absolutely blow people away if they gave it a chance. Trying to find the "best song of all time" from only the last 60 years or so is a little like holding a "tallest midget" contest.

However, I'm not a total snob. Here's a more recent song that I like very much: "The Origin of Love" from the movie Hedwig and the Angry Inch. 8)

UPDATE:

I just got back from listening to a whole bunch of diffrent songs that I haven't heard. I reckon lots of them could make the best song of all time.

Seriously, had to have a frown with this one.
And try not singing along.
Go on, I dare you.
Look, your foot's tappin' as we speak.
