Ya know, like good meaning, good riff, good vocals, good beat, all that stuff.
In triple j's opinion, its smells like teen spirit by nirvna. Great song an all, good meaning, good riff blah blah blah. But I reckon, the best song of all time (in my opinion), is radio friendly unit shifter by nirvana. Its gota very catchy riff, good structure, great emotion put into it, good meaning, great everything.

Your opinion?

It doesnt have to be your favourite song(s), it has to have a good structure, effort etc.

No doubt in my mind... Layla - Derek And The Domino's

Love it for it's execution and beauty.

The story behind it as I am led to understand is... Clapton couldn't nail the opening riff as it was written so they grabbed a young studio musician named Gregg and he ripped right through it. And the history of who the song was written for ending in two of rock's greatest calling themselves "husband's-in-law". I wish I could confirm all of that. 8)

That's a huge question. And although I know you're looking for an answer from the world of pop or rock music, I'm going to turn to the Romantic Era: "Erlkönig" by Franz Schubert. It's a dramatic through-composed setting of the classic poem Der Erlkönig by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

I know, I know. But read the lyrics and give it a listen. 8)

In terms of best song, it very well could be Stairway to Heaven. That song has a brilliant progression. The overall structure of it is very unique in that there is no standard bridge/chorus that the song returns to. It layers the instruments amazingly -- starting with an acoustic guitar, and slowly adds from there until full-out "rock city" at the end. The performances are stellar by all four members. And, oh yeah, that amazing guitar solo and great lyrics. Really, it is about as perfect as they come.

Is it my favorite? Probably not. But from a clinical "best" point of view of, it is likely better than anything else that has been named. To beat Stairway, it would likely have to be something from the Who or Yes (have you heard "the Revealing Science of God" off of Topographical Oceans?? Now that is a song).

Best song ever...wow. Well for me I will go with my favorites and they'd have to be in no particular order.

Voodoo Chile - Hendrix
Red House - Hendrix

The Ocean - Led Zep
When the Levee Breaks - Led Zep

Enter Sandman - Metallica

Sunshine of Your Love - Cream

The Hurricane - Bob Dylan

Pride and Joy - SRV

Gravity - John Mayer

Lithium - Nirvana...

This is an endless list, lol. I'm just giving favorite songs by random artists here. If I had to pick one I's pick Voodoo Chile...and Red House  Those two songs could be on permanent loop as I'm stranded on an island and I'd be happy.
