Well, I live in Peckham so...

At the country end of my regular circuit there are still nice pubs to go in for a decent pint and music you want to listen to or better still no music. I can think of about... one pub like that in London. Exaggurating obviously; but someone from out of town wanted to meet up recently and I couldn't think of anywhere in the centre that would be pleasant in a gentle kind of way. In the end I suggested a bar by the river, just cos the view's nice.

Now I'm a fogey I want a quiet civilised drink with a friend: when I was a kid we wanted to party the night away. And the culture has switched in exactly the opposite direction...

Cheers - er, polite salutations - C

I suspect we beat ourselves up a bit too much over it, though. I've seen plenty of stuff in other countries - especially Scandinavian ones, oddly. Amazing aggressive drunkenness in Norway (sorry, Bluestube) where the booze costs va-a-a-astly more than we pay - so the people talking about raising the price to cut overdrinking are barking up the wrong tree, I suspect.

No offence taken, there is a lot of $@!& going around.

Strangely it seems that the teenagers aorund where I live drink more responsibly than the adults that are out on the town, or maybe that's just my friends....

I'm hoping that my generation will be a bit more sophisticated when we grow up.

Hi bluestube: you've heard me talk about how much I like Norway enough to know my friendliness towards your country.

So it's OK for me to mention that I once bought a round of drinks for some guys in a bar in Tromso and when I was told the price I nearly died of apoplexy on the spot. Then I phoned my credit card company to warn them that it was not fraud taking place on my account.

Honestly: we take booze cruises over the Channel to France where the drink is half the price of here. And I hear that Norwegians take similar cruises across the North Sea to Britain for the same reason. Differences are: for us it's a 30 minute boat ride and we arrive in Calais or Dunkirk - nice enough. For you it's a gruelling 24 hours each way - and you get to visit Newcastle while you're here.

Man, you're people are desperate for drink!!!

Cheers - C

Well, we're not allowed to make it ourselves anymore so we have to get a little extreme sometimes!

But I think it's more usual to shop in Sweden than Britain, shorter distance, especially now as the Fjordline boat doesn't go anymore...

Ooo - that boat has stopped? Man, that's a shame... for someone, I expect. I found the hour flight on SAS much more civilised.

...Ha. I notice there are flights for £53 / K498 right now. Hmmm, interesting...

And nuts to the booze - just look at the nice scenery to be found in Norway. Eat your heart out, Peter Jackson:

That photo taken from this ship. That's me, sober and mind-bogglingly cold in the comedy hat:
