Any other fans here?

Just something new to ask about I guess, watching some and wondered if I was the only fan of theirs on here.

Love em, no thought needed, stupid humor.

And if you do like the Stooges, what about your wife. It seems that women are not generally Stooge fans. Now I'm not saying who that proves is smarter but it's just my experience. 8)

I just got a big set off Evil-bay, 88 shorts on discs, pretty cool.

And I also wondered how they never killed themselves or each other with all the pratfalls and beatings.

I did read something in an article where the writer had sat down with Moe and Larry long after their careers were "over." And he wrote that even after all the years out of the limelight, Larry Fine still had a callous on the left side of his face where Moe would slap him....wow.

Classic entertainment.

They were great, you could laugh all day watching them and they were way ahead of their time. I would have liked to seen more of Shemp, he was funny too.

I really like the Stooges. They never got paid what they were worth to the studios that made the short films. You know, Moe, Curly and Shemp were brothers in real life, and Larry was a trained concert violinist. Moe ended up being a studio gofer in his final years until the public "rediscovered' the appeal of the Stooges. There was supposed to be a bio movie about the Stooges with Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and that guy who's in the new werewolf movie. I don't know the currant status of that project tho.

I was also a fan of their (stupid) slapstick. They were a pretty easy group to put down but I'm sure they worked their butts off getting the shows on film. Remember, there were no effects and very little control over the film. Also there was no money to do things twice. It was all up to pretty superb timing.

Compare that to todays standard of doing take after take until it's finally right. The pace is uncomparable.

The Stooges - brilliant really!! Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk!

I posted my initial response before I really paid attention to this. I disagree about their humor being stupid or not requiring thought. There's a lot of clever wordplay going on in several of their short films, especially in the Curly years. There's a scene in Uncivil Warriors where they're trying to eat a cake filled with feathers--the dialog is pure genius. Some of my other favorites include:

An Ache in Every Stake*
Ants in the Pantry
A Plumbing We Will Go
Men in Black (nominated for an Academy Award)
Playing the Ponies
The Sitter Downers*
Three Sappy People
Yes, We Have No Bonanza*

* It's impossible for me to say which of these three is my favorite.

In addition to some surprisingly clever dialog, there are literary allusions and several subtle sight gags in the Stooges' works.

And, no, women don't typically get the Stooges. Their loss.

I have a pretty extensive collection of books on the Stooges. I especially recommend these:

Moe Howard and the 3 Stooges: The Pictorial Biography of the Wildest Trio in the History of American Entertainment by Moe Howard
Curly: An Illustrated Biography of the Superstooge by Joan Howard Maurer (Moe's daughter)
Larry: the Stooge in the Middle by Morris Moe Feinberg (Larry's brother)
Not Just a Stooge by Joe Besser
Last of the Moe Haircuts by Bill Flanagan

Nyuk nyuk nyuk! 8)
