Welcome to the Forum Guitargirl, regarding the talkbox, you definitely need a mic and an amp or PA for the mic.The plastic tube from the talkbox goes into your mouth (it ends next to the mic) and by changing the shape of your mouth by trying to form words you create the talking effect like Peter Frampton did.

I'm certain Joe Walsh used it in "Rocky Mountain Way" before Frampton became famous for it... but who was the first to use it in a major release? 8)

I don't know... I'm asking!

I wrote on another thread that although it wasn't a major release the first use of a Talkbox type effect was on a mid 60s country music movie called Second Fiddle To A Steel Guitar. The steel guitarist had what appeared to be a talkbox type effect that he had cobbled together himself,it sounded great through a steel guitar,it made it sound like it was crying.I forgot all about Rocky Mountain Way and I have the album so there's no excusing it,I'm a bad boy lol.
