Just never been a big fan of Mr. Slash. In fact, the whole G&R thing seemed to pass me by. During their brief time in the spotlight I was heavily buried in the blues and traditional R&B. Though familiar with some of his/their work, I’ve never understood the attraction. I’m not trying to be negative or a “hater”, just don’t get it. What am I missing, kids!?!

Check out the link I posted earlier in this thread, you might like that. Izzy's stuff is very earthy and different. It may just be Izzy Stradlin that you are missing. Guns were a combination of different elements. Just like any great band.

Hoeycow: lol, I know. I don't hate Slash. I hate what he has become and I know I know too much about them which is kinda sad but I've also worked with a few of them and I saw them when I was just 9 years old so they're a big part of my life whether I like it or not.

Cheers guys,

CC

No prob because those are all fair comments about the Slasher. As much as I love the guy he is everywhere right now which is odd for a guy who has not much going on. Lately I've seen comments from him in just about every guitar mag I pick up, on American Idol last year, The Grammy's and even in the movie Bruno of all things. I think that we all like the idea of the mad man in the top hat just killing it but more people are in love with the image of Slash than anything. He fit on Guitar Hero because he really is a cartoon character. I still love the guy even if this is a Fender forum and I'd love to see the real GnR reunite one day.

I'm pretty sure they will. From what I know there is only one guy holding it back from happening.

Well they'd better do it quick because GnR in their current incarnation has been to Edmonton twice in about the last year and both times they had average crowds. They've been apart and wasted enough time already IMO.

I'm of two opinions. If Steve wasn't sacked I wouldn't have worked with him and met the guys in my current band. If Izzy didn't quit then I wouldn't have worked with Gilby Clarke and met my girlfriend. Everything happens for a reason.

Also I don't see it as a waste of time. Axl isn't bothered by the crowds being small. He's said he's perfectly happy as long as people are enjoying Guns N' Roses music which still IS Guns N' Roses, if Axl had done a solo album it would be very different. I like 2 very different Pink Floyd's and 2 very different Fleetwood Mac's so why not 2 different GN'R's?

Also being a HUGE Izzy Stradlin fan the man has released 10 albums, 2 live albums and 2 EP's of pure gold featuring Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagan, Marc Ford among others. Some of them are my favourite albums of all time. The 10th only came out 7 weeks ago or something.

When the time is right it will happen. Slash is the only one not wanting to do it. Axl is happy for it to happen eventually once he has these songs out his system and Steve would have to be clean too. Last time I saw him he wasn't in a very good way. Izzy has already played with both new GN'R and VR and has said this is the case. And Duff plays bass for Izzy as well as VR. Duff, Izzy and Steve are all on Slash's new album due out next month.

I know where you're coming from. The Rolling Stones are one of my all time favorite bands but, to a (slightly) younger generation, I can see how they might not seem as cool or as important. Heck, I don't give a rats butt about what they do currently but, I will always worship their classic recordings.

I love the Stones. (GN'R especially loved them, they covered them a bit too much.) Stones are one of the most important acts ever.

Plus I would never have heard of Howlin Wolf if it wasn't for Izzy so the '(slightly) younger generation' has its uses. Backtracking influences is how a lot of people learn more about music and about acts they may never have heard.

Gotta get some sleep now. Nice shootin the breeze with ya's!

Is this the same on the Illusions? Or just AFD? I've always had a hard time hearing Izzy's parts on the Illusions.

Its the same on the Illusions yes, only the 1st side of Lies aka Live Like a Suicide is the other way round.

Izzy has a cleaner sound on the Illusions, more percussive. He's using a 60's Tele through Carvin amps for those sessions mostly. I can hear him fine. I love his ringing out on Don't Damn Me and his chugging on Coma is immense. He also plays the opening solo on Back off 81tch and some parts of Estranged.

GN'R WILL get back together someday. Just not anytime soon. But hey, when have any of those guys been on time for anythin? lol

I don't hate on them but gee, that screeching overblown cover of 'Sympathy for The Devil' would earn my nomination for one of the worst cover versions in the last 50 years.

That was a band about to die. Izzy was long gone and Slash about to leave. They rushed it for a movie soundtrack. Just like the preceding album which was all covers. Izzy was their main song writer and without him there simply wasn't any original material.

They were great at covers though, that may be the worst but Live and Let Die is def one of the best.
