I am not experienced with the neck tinting with the shoe polish but had a decent result just playing a guitar outside on the sun. Now mind you my guitar's neck has very thin finish on it.

As far as baby wipes, hmmm your guitar will smell like baby's bum
Maybe get some dunlop stuff and microfiber cloth under $5 and you are set. Maybe some natural oil for your fingerboard if it is rosewood.

As for the 1st question IDK but regarding the second anything that's strong enough to remove baby turd can't be good on a guitar's finish.Fender makes excellent guitar polishes and there are also special formulas available for fretboards so it would be much better and could possibly save you some damage to the finish,to buy some cleaners specifically for guitar.

Okay, everything you wanted to know about shoe polish ...

I first tried this on my satin-neck Squier, and it came out really well. So well, in fact, that I later (after the below pics were taken) did it to both of my Strats which also had that thin satin finish. An interesting note is that the Squier ended up noticably darker than the Fenders ... I assume ... because the light finish it does have is thinner on the Squier.

1) Standard Kiwi brown
2) Apply a heavy coat to neck, staying away from the fretboard (I have rosewood) and nut.
3) Wait a few minutes.
4) Wipe off.

These pics show my Squier "after" which was originally the same color as the Strat in the picture. The pics do not do it justice, unfortunately -- looks much better in person.

The guy I learned this from did it to his. I was so impressed with the results, I did it to mine. And for the record ... I take meticulous care of my instruments. I would not have done this unless his results were excellent ... obviously they were. However as Martian says ... your mileage may vary ...

Also ... Are you Stryder as in ... ?
