I generally either play through:

Ibanez TS9 -> Boss Chorus -> Dunlop Carbon Copy -> Amp

or

Digitech GNX4 Workstation

I used to play through a lot of pedals, nine actually at one point. I figured out that I can get just as good of a sound with only two or three pedals.

Wah pedals are controled in realtime. Volume and some pitch shifting pedals like the whammy pedal are too.

Wah pedals are good and if your grounded in playing their the ideal way to get into effects. If you've just mastered Barre chords dont bother yet, theres plenty more to be doing in the meantime.

If your strat has the bridge wired without tone you can nearly get a wah sound. All you do is lower the middle pickup tone control to zero. Then strike a note and flick through the switch back and forth. Hendrix used this technique on voodoo chile, where he plays the C# on the 2nd fret of the B string and bends up the the B on the 4th fret of the G string to C#. Kind of a pseudo wah sound.

I own a lot of pedals. I use 5 in a chain and never have mor ethan 2 one at one time.

Boss:

1. TU-2 Tuner (not really a pedal)
2. Ce-3 Chorus
3. GE-7 Eq (Again not really a pedal)
4. MT-2 Metal Zone (Maiden to Metallica sounds)
5. OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion (Black Sabbath to Skynnard sounds)

Dunlop:

1. Orginal Crybaby wah-used sparingly

I usually use the Eq, one other pedal, and maybe a wah used sparingly. Never more than 2 red lights on at one time.

But you have to understand I have a 30 watt solid state amp and just cannot get the sounds I like from a small practice amp without help. Although some of my orginal work I do not use any effects pedals and use just what tones I can get off the amp.

I'm in a similar boat. My pedal setup is relatively small, and currently includes:

Boss TU-3 tuner (brand new!)
ProCo Turbo Rat (a good, versitile pedal for distortion and overdrive)
Boss SD-1 (used as a gain booster)
Boss GE-7 EQ
Boss RV-3 delay/reverb

I've tried switching in some other pedals here and there, but this setup seems to cover my needs pretty well.

I just came home with my first pedal... a BOSS DS-1 about an hour ago. I like the flexibility it offers for tone and gain. I can play the valve amp clean and also grab a nice fuzzy sound without having to adjust any other controls. I have to play with it more to see what it's got but so far am happy with it. 8)

I got a Metal X pedal left over from my youth and always liked a little chorus for color both on the clean and smelly sound. I used to like to toss in a little delay for leads but other than that, that's it. I just picked up a Boss Blues driver to try the results of backing off the crunch of the Metal X and warm up the dirty sound. Don't know how it will sound yet since my guitar is in pieces. Hope it will sound half descent.

Tomorrow morning I am going to try it out on the Behringer and mix up some effects with the distortion from the pedal. If I don't go deaf, it should get interesting.  I know tubes are loud... but that V-Tone 210 packs a pretty good wallop as well. Louder than I care to go in my 20'X20' living room.

For Gigs I run

Tube Screamer TS9
Crybaby 595Q Wah
MXR M-104 Distortion+
Ibanez DCF10 Chorus/Flanger (set for Flanger)
MXR m-134 Stereo Chorus

in that order. I may get a Memory Toy or Carbon Copy delay soon.

For Jams or just Fiddlin' around I run straight into an Amp unless it only has one channel, then I might use the TS-9 or M-104.

I bought 2 or 3 pedals in the '80s but lost them all except a boss super overdrive that I dug out of the cupboard a couple of weeks ago. I stuck a new battery in it, played it for a while and then took the battery out to put it in the smoke detector when it started beeping.

I suspect my wife tampered with the smoke detector...

My "MUST HAVES". Never leave home without 'em:

My old MXR distortion pedal
My old DOD Overdrive plus
BYOC MXR Phase 90 Clone

Just 3 basic pedals and I still amaze youngsters with the available pallette of sonic goodness. Line 6 and Digitech got nothing on the classics. The tone is in your hands and in your TUBES lads.

Just say no to modelling amps :D

I have a Digitech RP 355 which I chained my favorite effects all into one setting, I go with a little compressor, chorus and a little bit of tube screamer. The remainder of the time I bypass and just go through my Fender SCXD's naturally gorgeous tone..:) Life is good!

As per my current signature at home now i chain them up with
dunlop wah (most of time out of signal chain)
boss tu-2
digitech bad monkey
boss bd-2
boss dd-3

+ Fender SCXD amp has a bunch of other goodies that I use for fun

Live I used variation of this setup with TRRI at the end. Pedals worked quite well with that amp.

I have a fairly large pedal collection and I use very few of them. At last count there were 42 pedals in the tickle trunk. I do rotate them from time to time but usually connect maybe 3 or 4 at a time.
