What kind of guitar playing are you referring to or what type of music ?

Are you talking about strictly electric guitar ??? Acoustic.... slide.... ????

The 2 guitarists in my opinion who could play VIRTUOSO electric, acoustic AND slide guitar were Duane Allman and Rory Gallagher. Hendrix was an awesome electric guitar player .... but very little acoustic and almost no slide. Page was a great electric & acoustic player but so-so slide. You can go down the line and pick out great electric players, great acoustic players and great slide players ( Sonny Landreth comes to mind ). But to do all 3 at the very, very, very, very top ....... there's not many !!! As I stated in another post, this is what makes Rory Gallagher so unique. He could outplay 99.99999999999999999999999 % of his fellow guitarists - but he wrote, sang & produced much of his material. He also played GREAT harmonica, mandolin, sitar and saxophone. There is NONE out there like that........... NOBODY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya know, you could probably throw Roy Clark into that list. He was an amazing guitar player and that includes slide work. He never got the props he deserved outside of the Oprey.

My personal view of the 'best' guitarist is one who is versatile.

I think that Richie Sambora is damned versatile. I have heard the guy play most styles (very well too). It isn't just down to technical skill either. A good guitarist knows when he is overplaying, and can limit himself to fit perfectly within the context of a song. I think Richie does this very well indeed. :)

I agree with master sambo that versatility is crucial to being one of the "GREATS " !!!! This is why in all of rock music there is no other guitarist of Rory Gallagher's peers who could play electric, acoustic and different styles of slide guitar in different styles of music except for Duane Allman. Again.... there are fantastic electric guitarists ( Hendrix, Page, Beck, Clapton, Vaughan, etc. ) - there are beautiful acoustic players ( Leo Kotke comes to mind immediately ) and great slide guitar players ( Sonny Landreth is unbelievable ). BUT ......................... to do all 3 areas at the very, very, very , very top - I only know of 2 players: Allman and Gallagher who could do this. And what makes Gallagher so unique is that he wrote, sang and produced the bulk of his material for 25 years + !!!!!
He also was an amazing harmonica player, mandolinist, sitar player and played a very good saxophone. Can anyone out there tell me ANY other guitarist of that talent and versatility.......... just ONE ?????????????????

Show me who the best guitarist is in the world, and I'll show you someone who is tired of listening to them.

Just my variation of an old phrase that if you don't already know, I probably can't really share on this forum...

Stevie Ray Vaughan's technical ability trounces that of Clapton, Hendrix, and Santana, but all four of those players are completely different in every facet of their playing, so it's impossible to tell who's the "best".

Stevie is the Best for me, but Larry Carlton is the Best for Steely Dan.

I'd rather see Eddie Van Halen play Jamies Crying than Steve Vai. But I'd rather see Brian May play Alright Now than Paul Kossoff.

Al Pitrelli is the Best Heavy Metal guitarist in the Universe, but I'd rather see Dave Mustain play Megadeth (The Two of them together is Megaguitar Heaven).

T-Bone Walker played with his Teeth first, but Hendrix did it better.

Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian pioneered that Smooth Jazz guitar stuff, But Kenny Burnell and George Benson did it "Better".

I hope that didn't clear anything up. :)

I didn't forget Steve Howe at all ... I love listening to Fragile and Close to the Edge. Steve Howe is an excellent guitarist but in my opinion, he is not in Rory Gallagher's league, especially when it comes to improvising. I have heard many different versions of songs Gallagher did and he was constantly coming up with new things. He had too.... he was touring constantly most of his career, 200 + concerts a year. Not to mention Steve Howe doesn't begin to approach Rory's slide playing, singing abilities, producing, writing and fantastic harmonica , mandolin and sax playing !!! Tell me one other guitarist of this caliber who could do all that... just one !!!! :?:

Steve Howe is an amazing slide player. Listen to Going for the One. By the way, Steve is also a multi instrumentalist. Are you saying the Steve didn't /doesn't come up with new things? Yes was one of the most innovative bands I've ever heard. Classical, jazz, swing, rock all thrown into the mix. I think you'd be hard put to find someone to say Steve Howe isn't in anyones league. If Howe isn't in Rory's league, then Rory is indeed the best there's ever been or will be. But personally, I don't believe that.

There are countless persons from all over the world who have truly "mastered" the guitar and musical theory. Most of these folks will never be a household name, but are they any less a great guitar play? I think not.
Who then, would determine whether a player is a "master"? What quanitifiers were used to judge? What quantifiers were used to judge the judges?
It's a vicious circle and one that will cause arguments that can never be quelled.
Therefore, arguably I might add, the easiest quantifier would be record sales and concert sales. I am reminded of the quote, "What if a tree fell in the forest and there was no one there to hear it, did it still make a sound?"

The parable is that a master of the guitar who is only heard by a few close friends can never be judged against others. On the other hand, the master heard by many is judged by many and accorded with the title master. However, we are again posed with the question of who appointed the judges to do the judging.

So we are left to allow money to do the judging. The person who sells millions of copies of his/her recording and sells millions of tickets to judges of his/her guitar playing is accorded the title master. But always waiting in the dark is player who has yet to be judged against the master of the day.

Alas, money does a king not make, but does afford the titleholder to live like a king...if not for a lifetime, at least for a day until someone proclaims "the emperor is not wearing clothes!"
