There are countless persons from all over the world who have truly "mastered" the guitar and musical theory. Most of these folks will never be a household name, but are they any less a great guitar play? I think not.
Who then, would determine whether a player is a "master"? What quanitifiers were used to judge? What quantifiers were used to judge the judges?
It's a vicious circle and one that will cause arguments that can never be quelled.
Therefore, arguably I might add, the easiest quantifier would be record sales and concert sales. I am reminded of the quote, "What if a tree fell in the forest and there was no one there to hear it, did it still make a sound?"

The parable is that a master of the guitar who is only heard by a few close friends can never be judged against others. On the other hand, the master heard by many is judged by many and accorded with the title master. However, we are again posed with the question of who appointed the judges to do the judging.

So we are left to allow money to do the judging. The person who sells millions of copies of his/her recording and sells millions of tickets to judges of his/her guitar playing is accorded the title master. But always waiting in the dark is player who has yet to be judged against the master of the day.

Alas, money does a king not make, but does afford the titleholder to live like a king...if not for a lifetime, at least for a day until someone proclaims "the emperor is not wearing clothes!"
