That is way to wide open for subjectivity. There are to many facets and variations in music to really pick the best guitarist, for that matter any instrument.

no idea to tell whos the best with so many genres... people have different takes which will effect those opinons

guitarists like buckethead are very technical but lack the certain emotion gained by someone like matt bellamy who uses such simple, hard hitting riffs to convey such a great emotion in a song

It's the hardest question you could ask any guitarist... I think it takes years of research before any of us really truly can come to terms (in our opinion) of whom the better guitarist is. :)
So in short I don't know :?

The best guitarists in the world are not even in the rock genre. Somewhere out there is a classical or jazz guitar player no ones ever heard about.

Stop this nonsense about who is the best.
The one that touches your senses and want you to play the guitar is a
better question.

I have said this for some time now, and I continue to stick to my principles. :D  8) :D  8)

Stevie Ray Vaughan is THE best guitarist to ever live. And you can argue with me however much you want, I will not change my mind.

Maybe the better question would be something like: "Who's the best "blues" guitarists?" "Who's the best "Jazz" guitarists?" "Who's the best "country" guitarists?" etc. Although, if this was the old days, back when you could tell one genre from another, it might be a lot easier.

Ok then...the most technically skilled guitar player I've ever heard is John McLaughlin. If you've never heard him play, check him out. Seriously.

"Best" is a foolish concept to apply to artists.

Some are more technically adept, but couldn't write their way out of a wet paper bag. Others write great songs that some technicians find uninspiring because anyone could play them.

Listen, and find what you like.

I have a short list.....George Harrison was a genius using open chords for melodies, and for introducing the electric 12-string....Roger McGuinn played one of the most kinetic solos ever recorded on The Byrd's "Eight Miles High".......Hendrix was the consummate over-all genius of the electric guitar, taking it way, way beyond anything heard before that.....Stevie Ray was Hendrix's heir apparent, but with more disciplined blues and jazz sense, Robin Trower captured Jimi's essence and mysticism, Clapton and the two aforementioned cats took the guitar into the emotional stratosphere....... Todd Rundgren, Joe Walsh.....yeah, it's a bit hard to pin down the ultimate guitarist....there are hundreds of bar bands in every major city....sometimes you'll hear a gem in some dive on the shanty-town side of a city.....too many guitar noodlers out there...listen to what you play when you play it....keep in mind the riffs of your favorite big names.......

There isn't just one great guitar player. Each artist learned from another before them, so the list is endless. If you asked the artist this question they'd name several people, but they wouldn't name themselves.

Guitarists are their worst critics.

It's a tie between Django, Jeff Beck and Mike Stern.
