if a guitar had a missing tone control and the fork part that holds it was split in half how much would it cost to fix something like that on an older cheap guitar like a teisco? is it even worth it?

Well, if you want it to just be functional, and not be a vintage pot or something, it would cost about $4.00 for the pot, if you know how to solder yourself. If you don't, and need to have it done, I can't imagine it would be more than about $30. The guitar place by me charges about $20 to replace a pot I think.

If you want an original type pot, might be a little more, but I would think it still wouldn't be that much to fix.

It costs a couple of quid for a new pot. A fiver for a soldering iron and another couple of quid for a roll of solder.

Then all you do is solder the wires from the old pot onto their positions of the new pot. Bolt the pot into place and away you go.

im in america, and although i would love to be able to do my own work i leave it up to the pros, especially on a classic old relic. Let's assume i asked a pro to clean the inside under the switches, knobs, check the wiring and fix the tone knob holder what do you figure 150-200?

Never owned a project guitar but im seeing that finding old guitars mint is rare and wondering if it's not a bad idea to once in awhile save a relic, even if its not cost effective.

Just to see it in it's original splendor. Call me a little romantic about guitars but i like to see them played not in the trash or hanging in a museum.

look here to see what people here think about salvaging guitars!
http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... hp?t=30747

You could check around and ask for quotes for work from places in your area. Or, you could learn how to do stuff like this on your own, and view it as a project. depending on the value of the guitar in question of coarse.

teiscos are a nice niche guitar though, some have pretty high collector's value, some don't, but they definitely have a devoted following.

I have one from 66. it needs some love. it has been completely refinished, though so it will never be worth a ton, but that opens the door for me to play around with it.

It shouldn't be solid black, so it will be redone, haven't decided if i will go with a teisco burst, or maybe a one-off fun paintjob instead. The electronics need to be redone, and the neck needs some work too. but i will (eventually,) get to all of that.

what about the pickguard? It seems to match the black, will you replace that too?

Kind of a shame i like your original colour as it seems sort of rare for these guitars as almost every teisco ive ever seen was sunburst.

How can you date these?

on the age: It's been a while since its been apart, I think there were markings. I checked with a few people "in the know" and they told me it sounded right.

I got this guitar for pretty cheap, so i didn't really care too much. I can't remember if there were any date stamps or anything, maybe i'll tear it apart and look again. I'm pretty confident its from 65 or 66. The striped metal pickguard appeared in 65, so no older, and the model i have wasn't available in North America after 66.

Theres a great resource :
http://www.mark-cole.co.uk/teisco/

On the colour, I found i had too many black guitas. totally not by design, but just sort of happened. i have a black and white Strat, a black ibanez(refinished now, but probably redo it, it had an accident before reassembly,) a black P-Bass (stripped down, and i'll do a refin thread when I can get rolling on it,) and a couple other cheapo black guitars.

I probably won't do a sunburst. This guitar isn't stock anymore, so i'm not married to the burst. The neck was painted, but was stripped down and left un finished, but played, by a previous owner. it will take a lot of work i think, i am thinking of trying something a bit different than fender or other big companies do.the tuners are pings, better than the original tuners, i'm sure, but very far from stock.

The pickguard is staying though. it is silver metal, with the stripes seeming like etching in the silver. I can see it working with a lot of different paint styles.

This guitar has a real surf feel to it, so i am thinking something more bright. The bursted tiescos seem a little drab to me. Not warm and woody like a fender Burst, and not vibrant like Cherry Bursted LP.
I actually have been mulling around something not unlike your avatar choice, Candy Apple red with like Inca silver racing stripes. But maybe a more orangish red, not tangerine, but brighter than most CAReds.(kinda scared to say this, because Ceri has an eidetic memory, and will hold me to this, and it will take a lot of work to do right. But after seeing his excellent efforts how do you refuse?!)

No-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o! So this is our reward for waiting so patiently!

Oh well. That means you can do it again for us. :D
