Looking at it, I'd be suprised if you can get a clean tone at any kind of volume where you could jam with others. A 5watt marshall is going to sound loud enough on your own, I think when you get it out its going to get the powervalves cooking a bit too much for a true clean sound at volume. Its what marshall's do best and why we love em.

For clean theres only one way to go, Fender. For gain you couldnt get me away from marshall. 2 very different horses on very different courses.

I'd expect a classA basic 5watt marshall to give a very classic 70's kind of sound (think free, alright now). Particularly with their recent return to form on the vintage modern.

Hi Niki: I have an idea you haven't actually played it, have you? And yet your review is spot on! :D

In response to Mr Thumb's question about break-up what you've said about a '70s-ish rock tone is right on the money. I didn't crank it so I don't know how well it would hold up in a jam situation. Definitely it ain't going to give "bell-like" clean tones at that level, obviously. Allowing for the size of the thing I'd describe it as a very convincing Marshall sound, and we more or less know what that means. I'd be delighted to play it without pedals: someone else, who knows?

On that vid that Marshall issued to launch the Class5 I noticed that Bonamassa had about three of them side by side. Assuming they were all on then that's what he felt he needed to play against his band. But then he normally plays through two 4x12s so...

Ultimately, just gotta suck it and see!

Cheers - C

PS Hot damn: now I'm gassing for one all over again...
