Are there 'aliens' - yes, probably

Are they superior in their technology - not necessarily - they could easily be bacteria or dinosaurs, or even ssimple plants. The conditions and historical events and extinctions or evolutions of their planet will never in all probability match up to ours. It is perfectly plausible that the freak genetic mutations that caused us to have opposable thumbs and stand up right haven't happened yet...bear in mind also that our planet is unique in our solar system in having plate tectonics, most planets are gassy, and also our planet only supports our life because it just happens to lie ata particular distance/ratio that by chance happens to be an optimum for maintaining an atmosphere capable of supporting life

Can they get here 'just like that' - in all probability no - there is no real physics that sugests that space ships could travel at the speed of light. the nearest habitable planet is light years away which could mean it would take centuries to get to us, assuming they have the technology to support life cryogenically for that length of time (or maybe they'll just bvreed on board so a later generation actually sees us?)...

Maybe they have a much a longer lifespan than us though.

Maybe they also have technology that we cant yet understand. If you went back in time as little as 100 years and showed someone a music video played on an iPod Nano they would not be able to understand such things and would probably have a stroke on site of it.

that's a lot of maybe's. Like I said in my post there is no way to rule it out completely, but there is no proof of any kind. Until there is actual rock solid evidence all talk on the subject is at best speculation, and more likely fantasy.

Scientifically the burden of proof lies on the side that needs to prove something exists, not on the side that doesn't.

On earth there are already species that have substantially longer lifespans than us, most are plants.

To automatically assume that intelligent life similar to our own is the only logical path, or even the most likely path of evolution is to misunderstand the concept almost entirely. life on these planets could have deviated from us so drastically we may not even recognize it, or it(them,) us. And that's assuming a common ancestor. But if life started spontaneously in more than one spot in the universe then there could be next to no commonalities at all. keep in mind all vertebrates can trace their ancestry to one species that carried one mutation. fossil evidence shows that it almost died out, if it had how different would the planet be? would algae be the highest lifeform, or something very like it?

in fact we have no way of knowing how many times life may have begun and sputtered out on Earth. Were the bugs that we eventually came from the first to take root? or were there other failed lineages? Could there be earthbound aliens, microbes or such that we share no ancestry with left from that? did life start as a microbe(or colony thereof,) from the stars, or could it have been kicked off by complex chemical reactions on earth?

Oh and Ceri, I'm in Calgary. Are you really heading over here? if so when?

If we are throwing time travel into the equation, maybe UFO's are from an advanced Human Race in the future, travelling back in time.

Oh man, I wish I was! Some day, sooner than later I hope.

My old dad comes to Toronto a lot, maybe I can hitch along with him sometime and travel on. Beer, guitars and discussion of alien life forms. What's not to like? :D

Cheers man - C

The universe is so huge that whatever we imagine has probably happened. There are a lot of maybe's. But there are a lot of maybe's in what we DO know also.

I am a believer that there is life on other planets. I am also a believe that we have been/are being visited by other beings. Too many reports, too much evidence, and too much denial from Government officials.
