Malta Spitfire Aces (Osprey Aircraft Of The Aces 83), Steve Nichols

Desperate times upon and above the most heavily bombed place on earth. Gallant men, many of whom died or were greviously crippled, too young, flying Reginald Mitchell's legendary creation in the cause of freedom. Eternal honour and thanks to them.

With happiness for the vigor and endurance of the story and a little sadness that it must come to an end, I've completed reading "Treasure Island" again.
So soon after entering the adventure called life I was given this book to read by my Dad, a straight arrow if there ever was one, and I read it again and again enjoying it more with each read until I thought "I should wait and read this another time later". Well, you all know what happens, life goes on and life's adventures take on the importance of their time in their place. Many books read, some liked, some not so much, but always in the back of my mind the thought that I would read that great adventure story again sometime.
How fitting that I was introduced to this book soon after coming through the entrance of life's adventure and now I've read it as planned, as I am approaching the adventures exit.
For those of you Brothers and Sisters who haven't read Robert Louis Stevenson's book "Treasure Island" please do and for those that have read, please do again for it is a fun book as you know and can be an inspiration!

My favorite part of the book so far is when the 2 main characters steal a Fender Bassman amp. I got the perfect visual from the way the author described it.

(yes, this happens in the book)

I'm currently hurrying through the third Stieg Larsson novel, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest.

(I notice both Amazon and the US publisher move the apostrophe - Hornet's Nest - which suggests it must be an extremely small nest. But after all, why should a book seller or a publisher be able to read and write...?)

It's crap. The first book, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, was kinda OK I guess, and very slightly different if thrillers are your thing. The second was deeply feeble and in urgent need of an editor - which of course it didn't get because he died before any of them were published. And this third volume is at least as tiresome as the second.

I'm only reading it out of silly, bone-headed male completism. And so I can save a few other people some hours of their lives by recommending against it. My service to mankind.

Cheers - C

your a diamond mate, id have probably noticed the movement of the apostrophe without having a clue as to its meaning!

As for moi as soon as Mrs Al87 is done with it i shall be reading Duff Mckagan's Its so easy and other lies.

Other than that a couple of referance books at present including one called 25 guitar gods who changed the world or some such title. Just got to Jerry Garcia (of the 25)

Based on this post, I want this book. I bet you'd like "Grow Up" by Ben Brooks.

Back on page five of this thread Mr Nutter mentioned that he was reading The Second Coming by John Niven, and now he's been kind enough to lend it to me.

Précis: God has been away on a fishing trip for 400 years and upon arriving back is shocked rigid to discover what humanity has been up to lately. There's nothing for it but to send his son down to Earth for a return visit - and a way of reaching lots of people is for him to become a contestant on an American Idol type TV show.

Some hearty laughs early on interfered with Mrs C trying to get to sleep at night, so that's good; though as it moves on the book begins to feel like a funny five minute sketch the writer is trying to over-extend into a full-length feature. Probably some vigorous editorial discussions could have improved things quite a bit. Unfortunately, there's less and less resource for editing in present day publishing: that's the digital revolution for us.

This book is not for those who will be offended at the depiction of God, Christ and various saints and angels as a bunch of dope smoking hippies. But then I expect the cover will sort out those who will like it from those who won't:

BTW: is this the first time on this thread someone's recommendation has been taken up by someone else?

Cheers - C

R.I.P. Marilyn Monroe
and
R.I.P. Norman Mailer, master of the one sentence paragraph, with that wickedly skillful use of punctuation, like little chinese firecrackers exciting the reader along, especially when supplying those within a sentence asides or comments/accenting words, with M-80 exclamation points to add conception to the flow of his sentences.
I had forgotten the impact his writting style/technique had on me when I was much younger.
Often chided for his over-sized ego, much to the chagrin of his chiders, Norman Mailers writing prowess/innovation was far greater than his ego.
The beauty and the beast are missed.
This book is out of print but copies can be found at your local library.
Mr. Mailer included an acknowledgment section which has invaluable references to other books/authors on Marilyn. Some of them he used when putting this book together.
Worth a look for, at least, the almost 100 photographs of the Hollywood Angel.

Nothing too deep for me right now - I read mostly at night to help quiet the voices in my head:

The Secret Soldier - Alex Berenson, the John Wells saga continues...
