Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - John LeCarre. Saw it was being remade with Gary Oldman and heard it was "the best spy story ever".

The Joel Osteen book had me from the first page and I'm looking forward to reading another of his writings soon. In the time until then I have 2 that are short and I'm reading a few pages of each at a time. The first is:
Bruce Lee-Words of the Dragon, edited by John Little
and the second is:
Lawyers And Other Reptiles, By Jess M. Braillier

I've just finished Norweigen Wood by Haruki Murakami. Seriously, seriously good.

The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry Garrard. It's his account of his trip to Antarctica on Captain Scotts last expedition and it's superb.

The Bible (Old and New Testaments)
It is about "Substitutionary Atonement":
1. Someone transgresses.
2. A penalty must be paid for the transgressions.
3. Another person (the "substitute"), who loves the transgressor and wants to save them from their fate, comes to pay the penalty ("atonement") for the crimes on behalf of the perpetrator, so the perpetrator will not have to pay, and he/she can go free. The substitute does this as an act of love for the perpetrator.

A quick summary:
Humans seem to not live by God's laws because of their desire to live independently of their creator. In doing so, they break his laws.

God is just. So sin must be payed for. This punishment is eternal seperation from God. Doing good deeds does not mitigate/nullify/make up for/cancel the debt that the human owes.

However; God, being their creator, loves humans so much that he wants them to not have to pay for their sins. He doesn't want them to be separated from him eternally. He wants them to be safe and reconciled to him. So, he comes to earth in human form (Jesus) as a "substitute" for them to perform an act that will satisfy the requirements of paying, in full, ("atonement") for their human sin.

If a human accepts this payment that has been made on his/her behalf by the substitute, then their sin will be paid for, and they will be free. They will be reuinited with their creator (God) in heaven at the end of their mortal life, enjoying reconcilliation with their creator and the many good things God has planned for them since even before the beginning of time.

If the human does not accept this payment, then he/she will have to pay themselves and be eternally seperated from God.

God is loving and just. He punishes sin, but provides a way for pardon from that sin.

Just finished "It's So Easy and Other Lies" by Duff McKagan. Great read, could not put it down, he is articulate and intelligent and tells a great story. Read it over 2 days.

It was part of my prize package with the Duff bass I won and turned out to be a great surprise!

The Skeleton Coast - Clive Cussler - I've always been a sucker for a good adventure. It's how I turn my brain off at night...

It was hardly a desirable adventure for those rogues and scoundrels in the afore mentioned book as they were all drunk most of the time and bloodthirsty and finally all hung by the neck, run through with a cutlass or shot. All save one captain and his crew that got away on a ship called the 'Squirrel'. I won't tell the name of the Captain else I spoil the read for some brave soul who's not too squeamish.
On to another book on Pirates that goes back a bit further to about 694 B.C., looking for information on that particularly brutal captain 'Barbarossa'.

+1, for Nigels book, more murder and mayhem, hangings and keel-haulings (a favorite pastime of the Royal Navy, Pirates learned it from them). Barbarossa was as much a politician as a pirate (irony?) and Captain Morgan"s demeanor wasn't at all like the image in those cute television commercials, lol. A lot more info on the politico's of those days taking shares of pirates treasure in exchange for turning a blind eye to the evil-doings of those nerr-do-wells much like todays lobbyist/politician pairings. Oh well, some things never change. So, on to a reread of, you guessed it "Treasure Island". aarrgh me hearty's.

Just bought "Plato not prosac" by Lou Marinoff. The guy is a philosopher and teaches people how to be more critical about their own life. Kind of. Should start reading it in a few days after I'm through "La puissance d'exister" by Michel Onfray.

Skeleton Hill by Peter Lovesey - a very good detective story in the Peter Diamond Series.

Echo by Jack McDivett - another series, but SF based - some really interesting ideas and characters.
