A few weeks ago I was in Italy and across the valley from the house we were staying in was the convent of Sant' Anna in Comprena - in the photo. This was where in 1996 they filmed the Juliette Binoche sections of the movie, The English Patient. Apparently, the locals have many stories about the goings on of Ms Binoche and the rest of the crew when away from the set - and if my Italian was better perhaps I'd now know some of those stories for myself.

Anyhow. Walking around amongst those cypress trees around the convent kinda put The English Patient into my mind. Long time since I saw the film and I never read the book it came from, by Michael Ondaadje: so now seems a good time.

100 pages in... it's OK.

Cheers - C

cool photo and story Ceri. I haven't read The English Patient to be true I was worried I might get bored so I'm looking forward to your final say on the book.
I am still keeping it light so this is on my night stand at the moment:
Life Is Too Short - Mickey Rooney

Hi SBLS. Well, I haven't finished it yet, but the verdict so far: it is written in a jagged, fragmentary style which I am beginning to find fairly tiresome. However, it is a big, sweeping story of passion, war and sand dunes, which is OK - if ya like that sort of thing.

(I'd love to think of Michael Ondaatje stumbling across this and finding his finely crafted literary novel summed up as a story of "passion, war and sand dunes". Hee-hee: he might not be best pleased... )

Cheers - C

Life by Keith Richards. It's a year long quest that was interrupted by a move in which the book was lost for a few months.

"Passion, War and Sand Dunes" sounds interesting, " finely crafted literary novel" would make me a bit apprehensive due to my ADHD tendencies
Thanks - SBLS

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I am thoroughly enjoying this read. It was recommended by a highly trustworthy source and has so far been a fantastic book.

Before that I read The Second Coming by John Niven: The Son of God is sent back to Earth to distribute the original message he wanted people to learn: "Be Nice!" He also like to play his Gibson SG- and picks X-factor as his platform. An enjoyable read (contains some strong language) for anybody interested in life, music, humans and how God spends his holiday.

And I'm also starting on a fantastic book covering the current Leonardo-exhibition in London. Sadly I haven't been able to go but Father Christmas (who in this case seems closely related to the Renaissance Master himself) made sure it reached me for Xmas.

What a Christmas it was!

Cheers

Nutter

New BBC series of Great Expectations starting tonight, Nutter. With Gillian Anderson as Miss Haversham - strange but true. Since the X Files ended she's kinda cut herself out a second career as unhinged Dickens characters. I like her for it! :D

That Second Coming book sounds interesting...

Cheers - C
