I’m reading Eulas and policy changes galore. Not just mine, but for Mrs. FSB too. They come from everywhere. New electronic thermostats, software updates, web pages, phones, tablets, desktops, cars, TVs, appliances, agreements, disagreements, and the list goes on. I might have to hire an employee just to read the latest blurb so I can use the features and the gear I own.

It’s a time waster and a no win situation, because there are always third parties related to or from. Doesn’t worry me though, I’m already in those databases and so are you. Our lives are even on no longer used companies’ databases. What annoys me is the fact that, even for necessities, I find myself attached to services I avoid(ed) or, like others, thought I did. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google this, Google that. and all the usual data gatherers including J.D. Power. Once you join they change the game. You can’t win. Like everyone, it gets to where acceptance is like offering yourself as a sacrifice. Refusal will be hopeless. You’re next up.

Not saying you shouldn’t use these services. They have their place; but, I haven’t welcomed most of them into my place, I tolerate some, and are unwary of others and, unannounced, they keep showing up. Here’s a little side note: I heard a report some time ago that a major computer supplier has or had offshore products land at a secret warehouse in the States where they are altered and/or scrutinized for Homeland security before showing up on the shelves for public consumption. Seems feasible,

Social media tools can be great organizers and disruptive at the same time. I hate that one might have a compromised game plan for whole (or part home) control. Just when you have your choice of Google, Siri, or Alexa, or whatever . . . somebody will thkrew it up by adding an incompatible service that is one more management delinquent. If you think replacing that cherished TV or stereo is difficult, wait’ll those one system gadgets, prone for obsolescence, start failing with need for replacement. As usual some stuff will be a welcome change, while others will . . . well, you get the idea. Another Eula.
Reading about new laptops, some MS Cortana is grouped or replaced with Alexa? Not that Alexa is better or worse, I have it included on Amazon Prime, but I don’t take advantage of it by choice. No need. I’m dripping with music services without Alexa. Oh, and I might be required to accessorize with more Amazon gear out of necessity and have both MS and Amazon accounts? Seriously? Actually, no problem since I’ve had both accounts for some time, although MS has probably expired. The point is, “How many configurations and affiliations must one need today just to use one set of gear?” Are manufacturers going to limit our options further with social media providers’ wars? I operate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless speakers with Harmon Kardon, Sony, and YouTube to be brief. Heating, humidity, and cooling by Apple (also expandable). Yada yada. Why would I want another EULA? YMMV. It’s hard enough to find the right laptop, and now I’ve discovered that I have to choose voice control over the meat and potatoes? Just because I ordered the main course doesn’t mean I need fries. Now I’m force fed fries when today I might
prefer mashed or none. I’m full already, and they won’t deliver without. :? Looks like whatever I choose I’ll have to read the menu after I order. Sounds like a plan. Can’t wait to read more about the appies before I check ‘em out on my plate.

In case it’s thought that I’m incapable or reluctant to use voice control and cool tools, I should say I had rare professional voice control and more for the home in the 80s. The house or a phone call got the party going automatically. No privacy issues, no Eula’s, or third party invasions. I didn’t use a photo service in the 90s, I had too many floppy discs  and I was too busy playing with 3D animation, and what’s with little or no free programs included today? Seems to me the new bloatware is the spyware provided and the pay as you go features. Bleh. So much about naysaying the freeware. Talk about shooting ourselves in the foot? Thanks, advocates. YMMV

It’s not technology that bothers me, it’s the glut that smears everything with it instead of improving on what’s out there (like a more usable way of video compression) When you get a contractor he/she might share your information with these powerhouses. You’ll get your bill and those informative details to read after the sale if you’re lucky. Then you’ll be introduced to Privacy or piracy details. Too bad I’m not younger. I’d take up camping again where I can pick blueberries and not have to order them on an app. I’ll prolly have an app for camping too. Maybe just to check in at home on my vacation from all that. Another EULA!
Who are these services for? Them or us? I dread the next TV or car. Hope I won’t have to change or supplement any preferred hardware. Heeeeeeeelp!
Phhht!

FSB

Know that if we have issues now, compared to yesteryear, imagine what issues are in store for those happy to join today’s status quo when they look back. I don’t believe they’ll be so careless and quick to embrace the offerings if there are any left. Maybe the day will come when those left will be handed a small handful or one Eula for all. Let’s hope the Eula’s never come around to collecting their agreements. I think all these services should come complete with an alarm. Dah?

Aw, Fuggedaboutit. Where do I sign up?

I agree, Gary. Eula's are so full of legal and technical jargon that we can't really give informed consent because we don't understand much of it. At least, I don't. I just unhappy click my agreement and try to "fuggedaboutit". :) No choice, right? At least not if we want the software.

That’s right, Marky. It doesn’t stop there with choice.

I just read a crawl that California and several other states want to control emission standards. Pretty wonderful, huh? A cash cow logistical wiz bang idea that will be difficult in so many ways.

Wasn’t it California that introduced expensive crap emission failures? That cost us then, and rewarded us with reasons for climate control today. Electric infrastructure to build, deploy, and use it, amongst the mining, destruction of waterways, nuclear or coal energy, wildlife concerns, computer and related parts to be brief, and recycling is far from environmental.

Maybe the kid with the Kool Aid stand has a better idea.

Well, it would seem that way. If Ford, BMW, Honda, Volkswagen electrics are on your list you’ll be good to go.

GM, Chrysler, Toyota, and Nissan will have their wheels locked in California with the latest propositions.

We know, like it or not, that climate control is a good thing. What and how is questionable IMHO.

As usual, advocates compare big countries with small countries’ statistics. Huh :?:

Maybe, La La Land should ask the kid on that Kool Aid stand if any of this makes any sense.

Yep! Electric cars are inching up in sales.

Here’s one look at why:

Now that sweet deal is another meaning for Kool Aid. :P

Note: My next door neighbour owns an electric furnace because a Hydro employee bought it. Long story short, my guess is change outs of gas furnaces can’t be too far behind for environmental considerations. Get your piggy bank out.

I just finished reading your interesting article, Gary. Pretty sweet deal alright. Free car and fuel for 6 years, nice! Since many things that are started in California spread eastward, and Arizona has a warm climate, these incentives may reach here soon. I'll think about it when the 4x4 pickups come out. 8) My house is already all electric. I would have preferred gas heating and cooking but, after living here for so long, electric isn't bad, IMO. My electric range gets hot almost immediately and has an easy-to-clean glass top. Not so bad, I guess. Now, how the electricity is generated is of greater importance.

Free cars and electricity is a good deal, but it looks like you have to be blessed with the job and money to get it, Marky.

I think those electric cars will fix one thing for sure: a lot of very cool sharp looking cars that look good in brochures, magazines, and those that would look great in my driveway and on the shoulder of the road. Sadly, these beauties are on the side or middle of the road, because mechanically they just don’t get any better with dependability,

There are so many, mainly from a certain country, cars that I love but we know they aren’t up to snuff. That’s an advantage of age. You learn that from experience. I’ve owned 11 different domestic and foreign vehicles, and driven even more. Sure they all had quirks, but the ones I wanted and didn’t buy came with historically bad dependability reputations and some of the most applauses just ‘cause they had the cool factor. Later the owners had heated conversations with others like them over a service counter; but, they waved the cool factor in front of us unless we left them behind with a tow truck. Not much has changed. If you can afford the car you can . . . well, we all know the rest . . . and so do the manufacturers.

I think a pickup would be great too, Marky. Mileage comparisons are more likely to be met or exceeded with trucks before that happens with cars.

I read that charged up courtesy cars will be made available in some circumstances like with the blackouts and the fires in California.

See. I really do like electric cars. They are cool, and they create great design possibilities. 8)
Like you said earlier, Marky, “Now, how the electricity is generated is of greater importance.”

I couldn’t have said it better.

A step by step guide that starts off by saying how good the guide is compared to others with the customer in mind, only it falls short.

The chair that I assembled had a piece left over that wasn’t In the parts list or the assembly and it passed me by because I trusted the book. Phtt!

Now I can’t disassemble the office chair that snapped Into the base. It’s a minor cosmetic thing that can be overlooked like the screws that won’t screw in enough to put cosmetic caps into them. As long as I don’t travel in a plane made in China I’m good to go. Well, sort of. A little talked about secret is that there are a kazillion counterfeit nuts and bolts flying the skies, and elsewhere.
I sure hope those aircraft manuals aren’t missing any assembly instructions or parts on the list.
Back in the 60s I read that a new Caddy (and others.) had been found to have 50 plus or minus shims for adjustments. Imagine reassembling that.
