I'm going through another Beat generation faze...this time I'm trying to collect all of Kerouac's novels. I still collect William S. Burroughs as well but right now I'm hooked on Kerouac's style. I'm reading "The Subteraneans" right now. It's set in the 50's to a background of early Jazz clubs and all described with words in a way that they've never been used before. He mentions Miles Davis and Charlie "The Bird" Parker a lot in it. Total genius! Jack Kerouac at his peak. In my opinion this book, along with Dharma Bums, Visions Of Cody and On The Road are masterpieces of american literature.

I've been half-reading David Millar's autobiography for a few months now. It offers a good insight into pro cycling, including the darker side of things. I like to think of him as being like the Radiohead the sport.

I've also been on kind of a Marquez kick;

Most of my reading energy is going towards stuff for uni nowadays though.

IMO Big Sur should also get a mention, one of Kerouac's finest books, and containing perhaps his most rhythmic use of language. I haven't read 'The Subterraneans' yet, yet another book gathering dust in my bookshelf ATM.

Since you're showing such excellent taste in books, have you read 'Sometimes a Great Notion' by Ken Kesey? It's very, very different from 'One Flew Over..', taking place among loggers in Oregon. Not at all what you'd expect as a follow-up to his more known debut, but IMHO it shows better craftsmanship throughout. Too bad he only published two books.

Just finished Sound Man by the great Glyn Johns, a very good look into the recording of some of the best bands out there from; The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles , Eric Clapton, The Faces, The Clash, and the list keeps going. I do suggest this read to all.

I am now starting Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks, this one is about tales of music and the brain, I will like it but it is not going to be as fun as Sound Man, this one is a little more scientific.

The Bible (Old and New Testaments)
It is about "Substitutionary Atonement":
1. Someone transgresses.
2. A penalty must be paid for the transgressions.
3. Another person (the "substitute"), who loves the transgressor and wants to save them from their fate, comes to pay the penalty ("atonement") for the crimes on behalf of the perpetrator, so the perpetrator will not have to pay, and he/she can go free. The substitute does this as an act of love for the perpetrator.

A quick summary:
Humans seem to not live by God's laws because of their desire to live independently of their creator. In doing so, they break his laws.

God is just. So sin must be payed for. This punishment is eternal seperation from God. Doing good deeds does not mitigate/nullify/make up for/cancel the debt that the human owes.

However; God, being their creator, loves humans so much that he wants them to not have to pay for their sins. He doesn't want them to be separated from him eternally. He wants them to be safe and reconciled to him. So, he comes to earth in human form (Jesus) as a "substitute" for them to perform an act that will satisfy the requirements of paying, in full, ("atonement") for their human sin.

If a human accepts this payment that has been made on his/her behalf by the substitute, then their sin will be paid for, and they will be free. They will be reuinited with their creator (God) in heaven at the end of their mortal life, enjoying reconcilliation with their creator and the many good things God has planned for them since even before the beginning of time.

If the human does not accept this payment, then he/she will have to pay themselves and be eternally seperated from God.

God is loving and just. He punishes sin, but provides a way for pardon from that sin.

I think that is just about the best summation of The Bible I've ever heard!

They should print that up and put it on the first page of every Bible made. In fact, I should print it up and stick it to my refrigerator where the kids and I will see it every day.

I just finished reading the Song of Ice and Fire series (the five books that are out) also known as the Game of Thrones series. Great books, can't wait for books six and seven.

The Book Musicophilia, started in the previous post is a little clinical, so I am reading this one little at a time.
Meanwhile I have started this " Rythm Oil " by Stanley Booth and it is pretty good history of the Music of the American South, he tells stories of many great musician like, Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurts funeral, Phineas "Newborn Jr", Elvis Presley, and lthe list goes on. It should be a lot of fun

My son got me the Nov 2001 Guitar World Magazine today. Featuring Ozzy & Zakk Wilde along with Hendrix, Zep, Stones, and Allman Bros. Has TAB for Midnight Rider so that ought to keep me busy a day or 2.

I recently finished Joyland, by Stephen King. It's like eating potato chips.

Now I'm re-reading Harry Turtledove's Into the Darkness, the first of his six-volume Darkness series.

(I love my Kobo Glo e-reader.)
