I received Carlos Castaneda's Trilogy for Xmas - The Teachings of Don Juan, A Yaqui Way of Knowledge; A Separate Reality and Journey to Ixtlan and just started re-reading them.

Having read them in the early '70s, I'm 4 chapters in and enjoying them more than I thought I would. Great read !

cheers!

+1! Enjoy re-visiting these books Lightnin MN.
I studied Castaneda very thoroughly. Implaccable, practical philosophy with
detailed pointers to -a good, strong life-.
I am sure you will read all nine in a row! 8)
On the one hand, there are the teachings, on the other, Castaneda is an extraordinary writer in his own right.

A while ago I read The Siege by Helen Dunmore, the story of a civilian couple trying to survive the siege of Leningrad in World War II:

Intense, scary stuff: muchly recommended.

It has taken me a while to get around to reading the sequal, The Betrayal. It follows the same couple, now caught up in the last months of Stalin's Terror in Russia in 1952-53.

A while ago I had the pleasure of meeting Helen Dunmore: she's one of the smartest and most fascinating people you could hope to find and, boy, she can write. This book is even more gripping and frightening than the previous one: at times it was so powerful I could hardly bear to turn the pages - but couldn't leave the characters alone to their jeopardy either, and had to keep reading through the night to find out what would happen.

Beautiful, elegant and highly readable. Unputdownable.

Cheers - C

Olen Steinhauer - The Nearest Exit.

Book three of the Tourist series, which I find I am reading out of order. A new author for me.

Currently reading "Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground, 1981-1991" by Michael Azerrad. It chronicles several bands from the Indie Rock movement in the US. That's from the time I was in graduate school so I missed out on much of the music from that time.

Next up (don't laugh): "A Natural Woman: A Memoir" by Carole King. I listened to an edition of "Sound Opinions" (a music news, review, interview show on USA Public Radio Broadcasting) about a year ago and they interviewed Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, a husband and wife team of songwriters. They spoke about working in the Brill Building in Manhattan and writing some of the great songs of the late 50's and early 60's. Carole worked there too and they collaborated on some songs. It sounded like a fascinating era for songwriting so I picked up Carole's recently published memoir to learn more.

I'm nearly finished Haruki Murakami's 1Q84 trilogy. Mind boggling stuff.

I also have an A level exam tomorrow on The Great Gatsby, so that should be a laugh.

" Superman , The High Flying Times Of America's Most Enduring Hero " by Larry Tye. This has to be IMO, the best told history of the Man of Steel which goes into detail about his creators Siegel & Shuster . It tells about how they sold the strip to DC for a measley $180.00 back in 1938 and got completely screwed over by them until a bunch of creators got together in the late 1970's etc, and got Warner Brothers , who now own DC Comics, to give them a stipend and a byline .

Lame of me, but I don't read. I find it excruciatingly painful to get through a book. Last book I read was Slaughterhouse-Five, by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. That was in 2001.
