Who else is a grunge and/or punk rock fan on here?
I am, big time. I've liked grunge since the age of 6-8, and punk rock since about 11. Why? I dont know, I guess it's just cause of the emotion, the effort, and that it actually means something. I mean, you dont have to be the best guitarist in your state to play the songs, there very easy but they sound amazing. Plus I also like the sloppyness, messy type playing.

Alot of people are saying in this thread that I like grunge cause its about teenage angst. Well, I dont know if thats true, and they say I'll grow out of it, but tell me, do you know that much people who liked most of nirvana's songs at the age of around 7? I'm pretty sure that age isn't classified as a teenager.

I like some of MOST genres, and never all of anything.

Maybe the late '60's "Bubble Gum" bands would be one we could all forget and nobody would miss much. I don't recall the last time I heard anyone request a good "Archie's" or "1910 Fruitgum Company" tune.

Never got much into "Beach Blanket" music either. Those squeaky clean teens of the beach party movies just didn't exist. Sorry Annette and Frankie.

An old punk here.

Riley I'll tell you know mate. Its your adolescent hormones causing all the teenage angst, making you like the stuff.

Still 3 chords and a load of volume aint a bad way to live.

You wont find many adults here liking grunge. Its like cartoons, you grow out of it because its all based on teenage angst. Stuff you look back on when you're older and say 'god, I was such a d1ck.'

Hey Riley good to see you on here! Grunge was the music of my youth as well seeing as I graduated in 1993, right in the middle of the grunge rock movement. That music will always hold a special place in my heart although I really didn't get it when I was younger. I've grown to appreciate it more now. Grunge and punk also shows you that you don't have to be a maestro on the guitar. That music may seem simple but it's played with so much emotion that it sounds great. To me that's what music is. Technical guitar playing is great but wrenching the sound out of your guitar is what it's all about IMO.

Count me in as adult who loves '90s grunge. Personally, any one who sees grunge as only being "based on teenage angst" has missed the boat entirely. JMHO. The four pillars of Seattle grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden) were about a significant emotional depth and pain, and not at all "angst". The reason these bands resonate so strongly today is because what they had to say was legitimate, real and heart-felt. Now by comparison ... it was "80s hair metal" that was based on teenage angst. Most of us who were there grew out of that wayyy before Nirvana hit. Knowing we even vaguely listened to post-Pyromania Def Leppard, White Lion, or Bullet Boys ... not that's embarassing.

Celtic: If you were watching cartoons that were based on teenage angst, you shoulda flipped the channel to Bugs Bunny ... (j/k, man)

I guess I should have worded it better with the cartoons, god, can you imagine! lol.

I totally get thats your point of view and thats cool. I guess its just most people where I live that associates that music with teen angst cos that what we all listened to when we were that age of hating life and our parents etc. The old school emo is basically what grunge was here.

I think it is just a matter of association and I do like Alice In Chains but I guess thats because I dont associate them with that time or era or class themselves or Pearl Jam as grunge as such because I like their playing. Me being 10, 11, 12 years old in Nirvana's 'big' years and then finding Alice later on in life too again just conjures up the association thing.

Also I simply loathe Kurt Cobain as a person as I have stated before. Again this is just my opinion and I'll back out of the thread and leave it to you guys who like this stuff.

Peace and happy playing,

CC

Celtic: Just because I really like Nirvana does not invalidate your loathing of Cobain. We all have our varous tastes. Personally, I loathe Neal Young ... which -- in this forum -- tends get people's panties wrapped around the axle, too. So I get what you mean. The way I see it ... for us guitars players who pay taxes, I think we all have more in common than differences.
