That is not salt but silicon. Don't eat that. It is to protect the case.

Silica gel. Used to draw excessive moisture from the air in the case. Unless you live in a tropical rain forrest your best bet is to get it out of the case and put it in your toolbox. Their great for stopping little used tools rusting.

The proper name for the packets is desiccant. You can purchase a quantity of it if you have need to protect anything from the effects of excessive moisture.

You should see the size of the packets we used to get inside some of the high-end horizontal and vertical NC Milling Centers we used to buy at our aircraft engine facility. They were like 5 pound bags of the stuff. Guys with lots of tools at home would scramble to get the packs for their tool chests.

I keep my disicant bags in the case as it rains a lot here and the Atlantic is only 100 yds from my house.

Winter or summer is not usually a problem time in the house. I typically have less than 35% humidity while running my big wood stove in the winter and a like situation when using air conditioning in the summer. It's those in-between times when the humidity may get high but not feel bad because the temperature is moderate. For those periods I run a plain dehumidifier. 8)

So did you open the bags and pour the desiccants into the case?

CC is right. The desiccant is like a bunch of little crystals or beads. I know you've seen packs of the stuff in something you've purchased. It always says "Do Not Eat" on the little packet. It's delicious! :P

... just kidding. 8)

That's right.

But hey, let's see what it tastes like anyhow. Will it be nice...?

[Slurping sound FX] ...Ew - no!

Don't eat that desiccant, folks!

It actually says on these thing DO NOT EAT. We would probably not know that if someone didn't eat that and then sue somebody
