I have... I dunno... about 600 CD's. I'm not big into MP3's because the format is "lossy" but occasionally a friend will rip a song so I can hear it and decide if I like an artist. If I do, I most likely will buy the album.

I have all my old vinyl still but haven't been able to locate a new belt for my old Yamaha turntable. :?

I am what could be defined as an old fart. I have no use for cds - never have, never will....but vinyl...yummy I love the soound, feel and vibe of vinyl. I usually download a lot of stuff, i don't view sharing with other people as illegal, but I usually do purely becuase a lot of the stuff I listen to eg hair metal, blues classic rock...is generally not mainstream and therefore unavailable on generic 'pop' sites like itunes, whereas i know on other sites I can get what I want from some collector who does have it. i will always try and get stuff on vinyl though if I like it. Obviously, that invariably means second hand record stores, so admittedly the artist probably never sees my money, but I know that they did get it from the person who bought that record originally so I don't feel bad about anything...

We all have our preferences, here's mine.
In descending order of my preference.

Blu-Ray (only 5 music disks so far, but they blow the other formats away),
DVD-Audio (around 40 disks)
SACD (just 2 disks)
CD (around ~700 disks)

Exception is Vinyl if I can find something good.I will try to buy it :)

On-line/Downloads of itune/mp3 stuff - 0, not worth the time, effort & cost for what you get.

Web transfer of DAW tracks, whenever someone lets me listen to what they are working on - really nice. :)
And I will occasionally root around soundclick if someone I know is putting their work up.

CD's generally through Amazon. Sometimes I'll download off iTunes.

I buy second hand cds, that way i know the artist got the money from the original owner and buying them doesnt break the bank. But if im setting out to get one song ill normally buy it off itunes.

I buy CD's and vinyl except for iTunes exclusives such as Izzy Stradlin's last 5 albums.

There's just something about vinyl that sounds better. Just like a tube amp

I buy used cassettes, Cds , and now i will use itunes because i just got my first ipod. More than likely i will just transfer my cds to it to keep from hauling them around and damaging them. I will also download music that can't be found on cd anymore from pay sites.

Well I have access to what ever albums I want to hear or else I just go to my brothers and record what I want since he is a collector of vinyl. The biggest problem I have is finding new and interesting music. I mean it is really scary how bad the music scene is. I would believe the forum on a whole listens to 90% of older music which is a shame. This is the longest I have ever seen it go without some new band making noise. All I see is Lady Ga Ga ,LiL Wayne and the Jonas Brothers and to be honest I am scared.lol

sorry guys...
i am a full blooded pirate
i download full cds from torrents

i know this is bad but there is no escape from piracy for anyone. i am an aspiring musician myself and if i get famous i wouldn't care if people pirated my music. it's just a fact of life these days, the industry is gona have to change

+ i am music addict and there is no way i could afford my 600 cds on my computer as i have graduated with no work experience and have found it impossible to find a job in this recesion for a looong time in new zealand, so much that i am moving to australia in 1 week.

If and when people start stealing from you , you will gain a whole new perspective on this issue.
The delivery method will change, but simply put, if people steal everything, no one will be able to sell new music. if that happens and bands lose that revenue stream, then in order to become a working musician the day of a cheap gig will be gone.

people who claim they can't afford CD's or song downloads and steal music will push themselves out of the demographic that an go see a live gig.

No matter what you call it is theft. :)

Your Gov is not involved?
We have had several busts over the last while where to police went in to homes with a court order looking for pirate music/software/porn.
Our ISP's are required to keep IP activity logs of their customers, and produce it as evidence if a court orders it.
