I saw a nice vintage guitar for sale relatively cheap, he said that for some reason the pickups faded in and out when in positions 3 and 4 on a 5 way selector.

So, he dropped the price quite a bit but my question is does a problem like that mean bad wiring or bad pickups? The guy selling the guitar said he thinks it needs the wiring fixed but really doesnt know alot about guitars.

Anyway, the price was only 200 bucks for a 60s relic so its not like id get creamed financially if i bought in as is condition, im just curious if any guitar docs out there could give me advice on what it could be or how much it costs to fix wiring and who could do that sort of work?

Thx.

Chances are overwhelming that the problem lies with the pickup selector switch. It could be that the contacts in those positions have to be cleaned and/or have to be pried out for better mating and/or have bad wiring at their corresponding terminals. I doubt very strongly it is a pickup, let alone two of them.

Any competent tech can easily remedy this for you. As to cost, say you need a new switch entirely, it would be $15 or so for the switch and whatever they charge for the task. Around here, the task would probably be about $45.
