Just got a heads up from Miami Mike. Prices are dropping. For example: GC's online inventory is showing the Artist Clapton @ $1599 and the '57Hotrod at $1699. Other models as well  .

If these hold through President's Day and the usual anticipated sales, some creative dealing may be in order.

Doc

I wonder...would the creative dealing in question be more with the retailer, or with our spouses???

That would depend upon circumstances in each case. Where applicable, I would expect the degree of 'spouse-worthiness" to apply.

Actually, I'm pretty lucky...my wife lets me indulge my GAS, as long as it isn't too over the top. I have a nicely equipped home studio in our basement, and she loves it when my friends and I are down there, making noise. Nope, no complaints here!

I lack that luxury and thus take full advantage when my wife is wintering in Florida. My new study planned for the house down there is going to have to be tactfully laid out, and I may have to opt for off-site practice studio time if I have the urge to crank it. Of course, there' enough anticipated mahjong and canasta scheduled to give me the run of the house for a good four hours several days weekly. I'm sure I can make this work, particularly when I remind her that I have to do justice to that Custom Shop LP Elegant Quilted Maple Top she bought me eight years ago.

It must be loud

American Standard Precision Bass® V (Five String)
Series: American Standard
Model: 0190560700
$1,949.99 MSRP*

I have always played a four string but because of a couple of new songs a five string would come in handy, one would have to own a few banks to afford this, that is a good thing, just that I'm not a banker. I didn't want to look at the deluxe model (active pick-up's) it may be even more. Definitely great guitars though.

Now there's a temptation! Looks realllllly nice, too!

I only needed to get to a D below open E on one track recently, so I borrowed a page from the John Paul Jones playbook, and played the bass track for that song on the keys instead of the P Bass.

......and I picked up that FSR Deluxe VG Strat last spring, el cheepo, as a toy, just to have that Baritone and 12-string effect around in case. In fact, I'm having the Gilmour hybrid set installed on that guitar just to have the heavier strings in the bass register, and putting 9.5's my Gilmour.

I looked at the VG Strat also when the price dropped so low...I was thinking more of the convenience of dialing in the DADGAD tuning on a whim, as well as the 12 string....but, although I got the green light from the Mrs., alas they were completely out of stock in this area when I went to go and try one on for size....

Keep in mind that what GC can do is an interstore transfer. I had learned about the FSR way too late summer before last. When the closeout happened I asked the guitar mgr in the store I deal with to search the country for FSR's. There were 30 nationwide, and mine came from an store in a county north of me. That guitar's final MSRP before the closeout was $+2.5K. I paid $1099 w/hard shell case. The deal was sweet for me because when the Deluxe first appeared it was not offered w/a V-neck nor was the VG for that matter and I $@!&#* in writing to the company about that. By the time it happened for both, I already had had a CS Strat built to my specs which ultimately was swapped out for a Gilmour. So this acquisition was sweet revenge.

However, I personally feel that the Clapton and '57Hotrod necks are the two best in Fender's arsenal, and wouldn't mind adding that HR to my group. A Clapton I already own.

Actually, it was the local GC that I checked...I wanted the VG in sunburst, with the maple board, and they couldn't get one locally in that combo...I wanted a local one, so that I could play it first, before plinking down the $$. They did offer to look elsewhere, but I'd have had to pay for it before the transfer, and then go through the refund process if I didn't like it once I tried it. I just didn't want to go through all that hassle for what was admittedly a "whim".

Playing an American Standard with a maple board would have satisfied that component. Finding one locally at another vendor, just to audition the effects might have been an option, if available.

By the way, I just checked the Music Zoo. Their price on the '57Hotrod is the same as GC's and MF's. Interesting happenings.

Oh, I very much enjoy playing an American Standard with the maple board...I had this before I looked into the VG:

Mine's Aged Cherry. I would judge yours to be Sienna from the appearance of the grain and a color error in the photo. Is that correct?

You are correct, Sir...2008 American Standard, Sienna Sunburst finish. I actually adjusted the color in Lightroom to get it as close as possible to what it actually looks like...without adjustment, photos of it tend to really "redden" the edges artifically.

That's an awesome finish. A real winner they picked. I've seen a lot of great wood under some of those. Pity it is not more univerally available. Unfortunately, if you want it in something else, the order becomes Custom Shop and that'a lot more dough baked in your pie. I'd love to do a Clapton in that with white Lace Sensors.

Standards, I wound up trading that plus about 25 or 30 dollars for a brand new G&G tweed case - Now, this body on a Clapton....wow...excuse me, but just thinking of that makes me need to go have a smoke!!!

Where cases are concerned, those fitted cases made by G&G for PRS still remain superior to Fenders.

On the Clapton, that would be given to Todd Krause at the Custom Shop to build, with specific instructions as to detail. Perhaps a single block of wood as opposed to pieced. Another and perhaps better thought would be a hard-tail version of the '57 Hotrod which would give a great wood pattern on the back.

Doc
