Hello, I've heard about "string cleaner" before, but I was wondering if it was useful/necessary and how you use it...

I'm going to change out all of my strings on my Starcaster soon, and I was wondering what I should do to keep the new strings clean. The old strings (Ernie Ball Super Slinky) that are currently on the guitar are actually rusting (down by the pickups, where you strum)! I think I've had things strings on my guitar for about six months or more...

So if you could explain the whole idea of "string cleaner" and how to keep strings clean, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks! :D

I wipe down my strings after every use and that greatly prolongs the life of them.Dave Chiappetta Enterprises makes a credit card sized string cleaner that cleans all the strings at once and it's getting good reviews as you can use it with or without string cleaning solution. They are around $13 and their site is:www. thestringcleaner.com .Could be worth a look.

I don't use any string cleaners, but I do always wash my hands before playing!

Bingo! I always wash my hands before I pick up the instrument and I always wipe it down, strings and all, every time I'm finished using it. 8)

I wash my hands before playing. I use a Microfiber cloth to wipe the guitar and strings down after I am done. I change my strings after about once a month. My strings go dead about that time.

I polish and clean the strings after every play be it on my lap watching TV or in front of 1,000 people. I think it helps to preserve the strings. After any kind of session sweat and dead skin are taking away the life of the strings.

I use string cleaner and a dry cloth. 2 minutes of wiping will save you money on strings in the long run. Time from changing strings in the long run. Less chance of a string breaking mid set in the long run and most of all better tone in the long run.

First impression - That looks like a good product, even though a bit pricey.

+1
Good reasons too.
And I clean under the strings too - not just wipe off the tops. That's where most of the "gunk" accumulates.

I have used Fast Fret for years.
Here's a link http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/GHS-FastFret-String-Cleaner?sku=420451

It comes with a small cloth that I use to get under the strings.

Note to Celtic Cyclonus,

I wanted to reply to you about your last post in that "religion" thread, but it was locked before I could. And I couldn't find a way to reach you with a PM or email. So, I hope you see this, and take it in the spirit offered.

I wanted to apologize for any of my posts that you found offensive (or made your blood boil) I meant you, or anyone else here, for that matter, no harm.

I was hoping for it to come across from me that what ever a person has that works for them is good - in just my opinion. And if that did come across - and you still found it offensive - I don't understand the reasoning - but I still apologize. If something else came across - I apologize. My communication skills probably need to be improved.

Growing up and living in the parts of the world that we do - we may never agree about "religion" and/or politics. But the common thing about all of us here is - we love music, guitars, and most here love Fender gear.

I hope that maybe this will serve to cool the blood - at least a little.

Peace?? (I hope)

To others here - Sorry for this off topic - I hope you can understand why.
Please return to your topic and please forgive the interuption.

No problem at all rholloman!

Its a Belfast/Glasgow thing. Brad is correct to close these topics. I come on here to escape that kinda stuff.

Back to topic:

Yes, I clean under the strings too. My guitars go back in their cases or on their stands clean as they can possibly be so as when I need/want them next they are at optimum level and simply feel fantastic.

Yep ... same thinking here.
And it has worked and served me well for some years now.
Your last sentence above is worth repeating as a good reason for good care.
So ... "My guitars go back in their cases or on their stands clean as they can possibly be so as when I need/want them next they are at optimum level and simply feel fantastic."

(I'm just NOT into the "relic" thing at all - unless it's the real deal. Then I would still prefer it to be as new)

I don't use any kind of cleaner. i wipe the strings and guitar down after use. I have 1 microfiber cloth for the guitar(s) and another that is only used on the strings.

Nope no string cleaner.
Clean hands and wipe down instrument after use.
Change strings when they go dead.

I don't believe any amount of string cleaning and shining up will bring life back to strings once they have gone dull.

Neither do I but it DEFINITELY pro-longs that life. More so of the unwound strings.
