NYCgal - thanks so much for the kind words...the only thing my friends and I enjoy more than the simple pleasure of making music together is hearing that the people who listen to it are enjoying it!

Now get yourself that new guitar, write some incredible new songs with it, and we'll be first in line to enjoy hearing your material! :)

And thank you for the kind words, too, AND thanks to everyone for their time and knowledge & helpful advice.

I usually play late at night. (It's 12:30EST here now). I have a Guitar Port on my PC and I use headphones so I don't wake up the wife. Big fun and nobody gets hurt except my ears.

It varies and sometimes if I can't sleep, I'll just sit in the livingroom with an acoustic.

My brother bought me a "jam-along" system a few years back, and I could not live without it anymore. Basically it would be a case for divorce if I did not have it. I plug my effect pedals into it, it has an integrated CD player, and you plug headphone to listen to the music. You can choose the volume of your guitar versus the music, even change the key and/or speed-up or slow down the tune to figure out tough solos...

Its really great and avoids bothering anyone.

Dan

I usually practice on my acoustic all over the house when ever i feel like it but on my electrics it's usually in my bedroom where i keep my amps. My wife rarely seems to mind if i get a little loud as long as the kids aren't asleep.

I usually practice in my bedroom whenever I want to (considering no one is asleep), and occasionally I'll play in my living room (which has a nice, big, sound to it).

im hugely fortunate as i live with double glazing but also about 4-5 months ago i came across a bloke who had a hobby or something involving 2 inch sheets of polystyrene and he had alot... :D
So I've sound proofed my room which is a average size and ive got like 5 old carpets and a newer one stacked and layed over each other so i can practise as loud as i like:P I play daytime mostly but i do also have the occasional break through with a technique or song and find it's about 2am-3am

Not every guitar player practices in the garage....some city dwellers don't have a garage, or walls that quiet the sound....ie. many nyc apts have 'paper-thin walls'....the phrase that is commonly overheard by many a New Yorker being said by another New Yorker.

WHERE DO YOU PRACTICE YOUR ELETRIC GUITAR & WHAT TIME OF DAY OR NIGHT DO YOU PREFER TO PRACTICE?

TIA

I certainly agree with the comments about apartments...that was one of the reasons my wife and I bought our own house long before we were even married!

That said, I usually try to keep a guitar in most rooms of the house...I usually have an acoustic up here in the office just in case I get the urge to noodle a bit (or trying to work thru something on Youtube, although I do have a PC down in the studio too). While I don't have one in there right now, I have been known to keep a guitar in the bedroom for the same reason. Right now I have my new Bugera amp and two of my Strats in the living room as I've been jamming along with the stereo a lot lately, then of course most of my basement is setup to be our studio and I do certainly practice down there a lot too, particularly if I'm planning on being "loud". During the summer I've also been known to grab an acoustic and practice out on the front porch or in the backyard too (or even out at the local beach!). I don't really jam in the garage though as my garage is setup as my wood shop...and I don't think I've ever had a guitar up in the attic! LOL!!!

As to the issue of "when" I practice...dude...whenever! LOL!!!!! If I'm really practicing, as in trying to learn something new, then usually it will be either during the afternoon while my wife is at work or late at night down in the studio when she's asleep. If her and I are practicing something together, that's usually in the evenings as are band practices most of the time. Otherwise, again with guitars in most of the main rooms of the house, whenever I get the urge to jam, I just grab whatever is nearest to me and play. Sometimes for just a few minutes and sometimes for a few hours...and sometimes (such as during this currant family crisis I've been dealing with) not much at all.

Now drums...that's (almost) always down in the basement...at least with my 5 piece kit and usually never much past 10:00 p.m. (unless I have friends over for a jam and then it can go until all hours of the night and morning...we've jammed as late as 4 a.m. in this house). On the other hand my wife and I have been known to take some of the hand drums (such as djembes, doubeks and even bongos) out in the back yard and fire up the outside wood burner during a nice summer's evening for a little drum circle...and yes...we -do- live in a city...I think it really tends to freak out the neighbors!

I guess being an adult in his mid-40's does have a few perks...especially one who's married to another musician. If we want to have Lucky Charms or Fruit Loops for dinner...hey...we're adults, we can do that and we pretty much practice/jam whenever and where ever we want 8).

Peace,
Jim
