Not every guitar player practices in the garage....some city dwellers don't have a garage, or walls that quiet the sound....ie. many nyc apts have 'paper-thin walls'....the phrase that is commonly overheard by many a New Yorker being said by another New Yorker.

WHERE DO YOU PRACTICE YOUR ELETRIC GUITAR & WHAT TIME OF DAY OR NIGHT DO YOU PREFER TO PRACTICE?

TIA

I practice in my bedroom pretty much whenever I get the urge.

If my wife is out of the house I play in the living room rather loudly. If she is home, I play in the bedroom with the headphones on. I usually play at night time during the weeknights and any time I can on the weekends.

You are most fortunate, YZF JOE. I'm guessing you're in a house, rather an city apt?--perhaps?

I guess I'd like to know where the CITY DWELLERS (w/paper thin walls) actually practice their electric, plugged-in guitar?

Thanks very much

I'm cave dweller as well. Headphones keep everyone happy, the family can watch T.V. and I can go off to the den (second bedroom) and play as loud as my ears and head will let me.

actually, I do live in a apartment. For a time I didn't have any neighbors with vacancies and such, which was cool, but now I do. They're very understanding. They happen to be a pair of college wrestlers. I don't complain about them practicing their moves upstairs, and they enjoy a free concert from time to time. lol

Alright, well thank you all for posting info---much appreciated.

I learned on another thread here, and I see it posted on this thread as well, that I could use headphones and plug into my amp & practice so that neighbors won't be disturbed, right?

TIA

My house used to be out in the country; however, over the last few years the city has been moving closer and closer to my neighborhood. There has even been talk of one them there public cement ponds being built soon.

Thanks All!!

Joe, my new-ish neighbor is a college student, and when he first moved in he played his loud video games from 3AM-4AM....I don't think he'd mind if I played a bit of guitar LOL
But, now that I realize---thanks to all of you---that I can practice w/the headphones, that's great.

RK--you mean you may be getting a public swimming pool? 'cement pond' ? you said??

Headphones are great but they do have a downside for someone just learning. You can't here the strings. If you have any buzzing from a bad setup or just a poor attack on the strings you won't hear it. A low wattage amp is probably the best way to start until you get your technique down.

Yes, a public pool near my neighborhood that does not belong to the local YMCA.

There are amps that have headphone jacks on them. I have one and play at night time during the week nights. My wife gets a little irritated when I play during prime time TV.

Also you do not have to practice with an amp, but it does add more flair to the experience.

Thank you for all yr helpful info.....RK and everyone who also took time to tell me helpful stuff here.

So, I can practice w/my (not purchased yet) electric guitar just plugged into an electrical outlet, and LATER ON AT SOME POINT, I can get an amp. I will hear sound, but of course, the amplifier would 'amplifiy' the sound, if i were to use it.

(little steps LOL) THANKS!!!
