In another thread about"lawsuit"guitars started by Radiohead Idahored mentioned the Takamine lawsuit launched by Martin because of the Sigma brand.Coincidently a buddy of mine dropped off a Takamine F-349 last night for me to do a string change and to check it over as he had left it unplayed in the case for years. It has a mahogany body and neck and is a lot like Sigmas of that era(1984)I can see why Martin got a bee in their bonnet.I put on the new strings and was really impressed with the sound.Where it has an all mahogany body I wasn't expecting it to be as bright as it is but it's really bright without being shrill or tinny and it also has a mellowness to it.I'm not that familiar with Taks but I must say I'm impressed with this one.

I'll post pix when my computer savy buddy comes by next. The guitar has dark brown finish with none of the reddish tinge you usually see in mahogany but it has the unmistakeable mahogany grain.I hadn't heard of a Martin lawsuit either,I was going by what Idahored said in the "Is this a lawsuit guitar"thread.

This is the Takamine I'm talking about. It was my Brother's before he passed away. It's mine now.
As far as I know it is from the late 70's/early 80's.

Chet,

That looks just like my Takamine (AND my Martin D16GT). I am not
certain how to post pics here, so I'll just give you the particulars.

I have always been told that my (and your) Takamine guitars were the
ones that Martin sued them for. The prime difference, the Tak just has
absolutely no comparable tone. It is heavier and overly bright (I like
Martin for that thick, round, mellow tone). It is however excellently set
up and really a dream to play (maybe, and dare I say it, more so than
my Martin).

I'm not certain from your pic, but it doesn't look like yours has any electronics.
Mine has a volume/treble/bass sliding eq (takes a 9v battery @ neck).
I was told that mine has a spruce top and mahogany sides/back. The
headstock has a very Martinesque "Takamine & Co." with "EST. 1962"
beneath it. Inside the sound hole, burned in to the wood strip down the
center back is the model: "EF-340S". This was the guitar I purchased
on a wild hair back in the mid-90's because I was going to teach myself
guitar (I always wanted to play). Got it from a shop in my town that
was going out of business. Think I paid $350, but not sure now.

The serial# inside (up around the neck on mine) is in the order of:
YYMMDDXX (where XX is #built that day). Mine is an '82.

You have to have your pics hosted on a site like photobucket. Then you copy and paste the IMG code into a post here.

No electronics.

OK. I was not aware where any of that info was until you told me.

Model: F-340S-F
Serial Number is 77112659. So it was built Nov. 26, 1977 and was the 59th built that day.

Takamine had some really high end acoustics in the mid 70's Blatant copies of Martins not Sigma's heres a link to their website and the 12 string I had. check out any of the 400 series you see why Martin sued

http://www.takamine.com/se/?fa=detail&mid=1124&sid=351

I traded it for a Strat. Wish I had it back. Funny thing was I traded a Strat to get it. Wish I had that one back too.

Hey Chet,

Check out the F395 on the link above, I never new they had a guild copy but man it sure looks like one to me. And the F360 is a D-28 copy. I know the F451 I had was the nicest 12 string I've ever played. Never played a D-45 12 (don't know if they made one) but I've played a D-28 12 and the Tak F451 had a thinner neck and was easier to play any style.

I was checking out the Takamine site and if you look closely you may even find copies of others too!
