Dont you enjoy the sense of satisfaction when your efforts get to claw you a bit back? Never trust accountants mate. They will always be more liberal with your money than you are. Use em but check em too.

I may declare myself as a musician and make a loss every year. Get paid to go to gigs. Over here they even pay the tax on the petrol for work travel.

Normally I'd agree with you. However; This firm and my accountant in particular are known for massaging the "grey" areas of tax law. What they do IS legit, but just barely! Believe me when I tell you that they really do save me more money than I would have had I done them myself (which I did for the 1st 3 years) each quarter and at the end of the year.

You can't do it wrong with Turbo tax. Just fill in the blanks and answer questions. It does it for you.

There it is. :)

Hey c: I lived in Frederick, MD for like 9 years. I remember the unofficial Maryland motto:

If you can dream it, we can tax it.

I take mine to a CPA. For many years I used other tax preparers and then finally I thought I would try a CPA. For me its been worth the extra cost. I'm always confident the returns are accurate, and have had better refunds.

I have a tax lawyer who is a former IRS agent that's been doing them for the past 15 years or so. He's about 82 years old now, but still sharp.

I do mine and my girlfriend's. She had been paying an accountant and I checked them. I used his work as a guide.

I also like to check family members taxes (if they let me) when they use a preparer, but I haven't learned any secrets this way. When I do them myself, I get the same results as the preparers.

Or have them done by someone?

Mike, one of my sisters has been doing my taxes for the past several years since my accountant retired. When he retired I was worried, having to look for a new accountant to replace him seemed an impossibility, so when my sister said let me do it and she was really good, I was relieved and very happy.
