well Saturday i've got a girl that i like comin' over. I'm a little nervous about her comin' over because well, I don't do well around girlss i always get nervous and tongue tied. She's bringing over her guitar too, so i said ill teach her some chords. Any advice i could would be helpful so i dont make a fool of myself and blow it. I would really like to start a relationship with her, but i dont want to come on strong and what not, i prob wont because im too nervous, oh man. See, i've never had a girlfriend before, so i kinda dont know how to act, i mean i know the obvious opening doors and being a gentleman but is there anything else i should know? Boy look at me rant haha oh man....

First thing, breathe. I once was in the same situation as you. The best abvice I can give you is to be polite and be yourself. Remember the querks you may want to avoid may be the ones she falls for. Never be something your not. :)

Stryder1017,

Breath...relax...be yourself. Think about what you are going to say before saying it. If it helps, look at her as if she is just one of the guys coming over to jam. Make small talk. Talk guitars and gear. Compliment her where it is deserved. Flirt a little, but if she is taken back, back off. Most of all, have fun.

Like everyone else is saying, take it easy, and really do calmly be yourself. There is only one you in this world, and as an individual you are a lot more interesting than trying to do everything you think you should. that's just putting extra demands on yourself that you can't keep up with anyway. She isn't watching you like some judge under a microscope. What she WILL notice, is you showing a real interest in her as a person. Women want to be cared for romantically, it's how they're wired, trust me. Show her that your care how she feels and you will stay in her good favor. She's already interested in you enough to spend time with you, and you two share the love of music, so you already have an awesome start. Remember, it's YOU she's chosen to spend time with. The musical ability you have is only one part of everything that you are as a person, she's interested in all she sees in you, not just the music. Lots of people she knows play instruments, but she's coming to your house. Make her laugh too, clean humor is good medicine.

Something else to keep in mind. If she's investing in Friday evening with you, well then she's obviously interested in you to some degree as well! Just stay cool and stay real! 8)

Forgot to add, just teach her three chords, E A and D and you will get alot of mileage.

Hows this for an idea, play E, A and D in a 12 bar blues format and make up a song together... and you'll be laughing in no time.

Good luck.

ok, one more and I will leave you alone.

I noticed your title, Oh Boy. That is a great Buddy Holly tune with the above chords (A, D and E).

just be yourself because it's a lot harder to try and be what you thought you were while trying to be something else  just breathe and don't spill anything on her and you should be fine....

Hi stryder1017: you're asking a bunch of guys on a guitar website how to get on with girls? Man, you are in trouble!

My approach was always the reverse-caveman thing. Let them be the one to club you over the head and drag you off to their cave - that way there is no possible risk of misreading the signs.

And seriously? If you are teaching her stuff on the guitar DO NOT try to reach around her to show her fingering on the neck, accidentally-deliberately ending up with your arm round her. She will rightly despise you for that move.

Take her seriously. That's always a great trick not understood by enough men.

Good luck... if you deserve it - C
