Great ain't he?He was so clean and meticulous with his phrasing,he had such amazing dexterity he made it look effortless.Epiphone makes a Joe Pass model Emperior based on the model he favoured though he's not using one in this video. It looks like a Gibson L-4 CES he's using there.

Look Ma! No finger picks. A real treat, and the duets with Roy Clark on the same page are not to shabby either.

I had one of his LP's back in the 70's. He is unreal.

The guitar is an ES-175, by the way. :)

Hello Guitslinger,

It's a ES-175, the tailpiece is the giveaway
The L-4 sported a L-5 style tailpiece.

Joe most commonly played the ES-175
which he reffered to as a "Working mans guitar"

A super player taken too soon. RIP Joe.

Cheers.

Joe Pass was a genius. The guy had more knowledge in his head than any of us will ever even read. To most guys he looks like a sweet old jazz teacher when in fact he suffered with a heavy heroin problem early on that he would eventually beat.In the jazz world his name is at the top of the heap with the heavy hitters.

Man! That version of "Satin Doll" gets real tasty around 1:30 into the video with that walking bass line. Joe Pass really turned me on to Jazz.

What's a thread without a gear pic? Here's my Joe Pass Emperor II.

I always loved that clip. :D Mary was a great guitarist as well as vocalist.

What always amazed me was back when Les ans Mary were overdubbing, If you messed up, you had to start all over again because all your tracks were combined. Truly amazing stuff.

In many ways, Les Paul's playing, and his namesake guitar were actually among his lesser contributions. His early recording work is invaluable.
