It's a coincidence that yesterday on a thread in this forum we were talking about Rufus Wainwright and his singing with Sean Lennon. As we were discussing him his mother Kate McGarrigal(forgive the spelling if wrong)had passed away.I don't know if Kate is well known outside Canada but here she's a respected ssinger/songwriter and half of the McGarrigal sisters along with her sister Ann.The Wainwright family is all musical Lowden Wainwright, father of Rufus and Martha, husband of Kate has written a number of big hits for various artists although unfortunately I can't name any. It's possible that he wrote Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road but I'm not sure.Kate was a marvelous songwriter and the Canadian music industry has lost one of it's brightest stars.

I read today that she would always choose family over stardom.

So sad, although I never met her, I feel like I lost a friend. :(

I think that many have heard her songs, but maybe don't know the songwriter?

Exactly, a lot of artists covered the repertoire of Kate and Anna McGarrigle. I think that Linda Ronstadt was one of the first to do it, and it kind of started their career because suddenly, record company were interested to sign the young sisters and let them make their own record. :)
