So I'm finishing my basement this year which will include a seperate room for practice space. I am by no means needing it completely sound proof for recording purposes, just need to dampen some of the sound that leaks upstairs. Does any one have any suggestions to achieve this without costing an arm and a leg? What has worked for people and what is a waste of money? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If insulating the walls, leave an air space between the insulation and dry wall. This is quite effective for sound dampening (not proofing). There are companies that sale soundproofing tile that can be adhered to walls.

I've seen coffee cup holders and cardboard egg packages used to dampen sound in rooms, not sure how well. But may be an inexpensive way to go on top of insulation and drywall or drop ceiling panels.

Putting up polystyrene sheets will help dampen reflective sound as well. The more you can stop it from bouncing around, the less will filter off into other areas. Industrial applications use an "egg carton" type of surface on a foam sheet. Carpet the floor. Anything but a hard surface will help. No wood, wallboard, or concrete.

Standing panels of soft material will help a lot as well.
