Yesterday my brother inlaw who is into 60s music(except The Beatles!!!!) came by for a coffee and I had a Beatle CD playing as usual, and This Boy was playing.I was floored when he asked who it was,he hadn't heard it before, but admitted that it was an absolutely beautiful song, the harmonies blew him away. This guy never misses a chance to dump on me about my Beatle/John Lennon obsession so when he conceded it was a great song it took me by surprise,I'll convert him yet.

Great song, I agree. After 9/11, during the NY concert, it was amazing to hear John's son, Sean's version of it.....right here :

Have witnessed them starting with that first Sullivan TV performance, I take them song by song. I can't say that I care for the lot of it.

You're so right Mike,I got choked up when I heard it,when Sean hit the high notes in the bridge I got goosebumps,he's inherited his father's fabulous pipes.BTW isn't that Rufus Wainright singing the high harmony?I know that he and Sean pal around sometimes but I don't know exactly what he looks like but it certainly sounds like him,he does an amazing cover of John's Across The Universe on the I Am Sam soundtrack.

"This Boy" was also called "Ringo's Theme" and was in the movie "A Hard Day's Night" if I remember correctly.

I agree about those high notes sounding just like his father's.

Yeah, it's Rufus and pics on Yoko's Flickr page :

Not quite the same song. 'Ringo's Theme' was just a sappy instrumental version of 'This Boy' and part of the AHDN film score. Remember the scene where Ringo is out "parading"? The Beatles didn't even play on this song. It was scored by George Martin though. Then Capitol slapped the song onto the AHDN album for filler.

Yeah great harmonies from John, Paul, and George on 'This Boy'. I was just watching the Beatles Ed Sullivan shows on youtube the other day and got a kick out of seeing the three of them share the same microphone for the whole song.

Well I am with you all the way as there is not a band that comes close. I came into this world hearing the Beatles and they have been the soundtrack of my life and the greatest band there ever was or will be. I know there are people who do not care for them -a very small minority, but even they probably have at least 10 songs they like by them. To be honest just about everything recording wise the Beatles did first.
