Despite having just picked up two new (to me) guitars, I want more!!!! Now I'm gassing for a Gretsch, and the worst part is my current style of play doesnt lend itself to the Gretsch style of guitar in any way shape or form (with the exception of a few Rancid covers I play on the rare occasion, got to love Salvation and Ruby soho!).

What are your opinions on the electromatic 5120? I know its the lower end of the semi family, but have never played one ( I do plan on demoing some models in the near future). would I be better off investing in a more expensive model? Or could I just hop it up with a set of TV Jones pups?

I have a lot of homework to do before moving on to the purchase phase (which hopefully I can put off for a while for my marriages sake), so I figured I'd start with gathering opinions from some of my respected peers here on the forum.

Gretsch Guitars are excellent guitars!!!!!

They are very versatile guitars so saying they are not right for your kind of music would no be exactly true.

Make sure you check out the solidbody Gretsch's too! The Duo Jet's (6128's) are Excellent!!

I guess thats true Chet (although not helping so much on the con side of things  )

I actually demo'd a duo jet some weeks ago (found it on craigslist) but declined the purchase. I'd really prefer a semi or hollow body.

Thats a seriously fine guitar you have there JPD! '63? Crazy!

I have a 5120, it's an excellent guitar. The 5120 lends its self to all kinds of musical tastes.

I'm glad to hear that (as it is the most cost effective option)! Thanks for posting Bill. Could you take a stab at describing the charicteristics of the pick ups?

I'm seeing tons of MIM tele's on craigslist lately, although few if any in LPB (excellent color choice BTW). Happy shopping Airborne!

Dual Coil Humbuckers... They sound great to me, I play though a Hot Rod Deluxe. I am able to get a good metal growl as well as a good clean. A lot of folk change them out for TV Jones... I cant justify the price of them for this guitar. If you get to a shop and ply one, I think you will definitely want one.
Check out the Gretsch Pages (forums) http://gretschpages.com/

Hope this helps

Every bit of info helps! I will definitely try a few before making a purchase. Just doing a little research in an effort to postpone an actual trip to the local shops. I'm terribley affraid if I were to pick one up at the moment it would probably follow me home!

Thanks for the link. heading off to check it out now.

If you want to test drive a Gretsch 5120, don't bring money or credit card with you, because you'll definitely want to buy one. They are made in Korea and for less than 900.00$ they are killer guitar. :)
