For me its Rory Gallagher.
When I first started playing in a band - 1980 - the bass player said "you sound just like that guy er whats his name er I'll bring you his record tomorrow". It was the irish tour 74 album. I almost wore the groves out trying to learn the songs.
He used to come to my home town of Nottingham on many occasion and for one reason or another I kept missing him.
This one time I was making bottle necks from Le PeAdore wine bottles - ok wine but great for bottle necks - anyway, I made 3 and I swore I'd save the best one and when Rory would come to Nottingham next I'd give it to him. So I was all ready for the gig waiting, waiting, and then I read that he had died.
I feel choked writing this now.
To Rory and to all the greats thanks for the inspiration.

If I had to pick one it would have to be David Gilmour.

Eric Clapton.

Most of my list are blues-inclined Strat players, but the older I get, the more Clapton stands out. Forget the identity crisis of the mid-to-late 70's, the man puts gobs of soul into his playing. I'm not saying he's the BEST ever, but at least currently, he's my #1 guitar hero.

Top Ten: (besides EC, in no order)

Jeff Beck
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Johnson
Buddy Guy
David Gilmour
Robert Cray
B.B. King
Angus & Malcolm Young
Eddie Van Halen

Kurt Cobain, i love his use of f chords and the way he grindingly churned out music on mustangs and jaguars ushered in an entirely new genre of music.

Ok, maybe not totally new neil young invented it but Nirvana perfected.

Still, one very good and underrated guitar player.

I also love stevie ray vaughn alot.
